The Nigerian film industry is very wide and sometimes roughly divided into the Yoruba film industry, Kannywood and mainstream Nollywood. Most times, a lot of actors and actresses choose one area and stick with it. But these Yoruba actresses have successfully crossed into Nollywood.
They have defied the notion that it is difficult to move from one end of Nollywood to the mainstream. It used to be believed that once an actor leaves his comfort zone, he/she would start over in mainstream Nollywood. Well, these amazing female Yoruba actresses are still winning. Check them out.
1. Funke Akindele
Although she started her career in an English sitcom I Need To Know, Funke did mostly Yoruba films. She crossed into Nollywood fully with her hit show Jenifa and has been slaying since.
2. Mercy Aigbe
Mercy hails from Edo state but grew to become a star in the Yoruba film industry. She has since featured in top-notch English Nollywood films and is one of the most popular actresses in the game.
3. Toyin Abraham
Toyin broke into Nollywood fully in 2016 with the movie Love Is In The Hair. Since then, she has produced and featured in a slew of popular movies – one of which earned her an AMVCA nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
4. Dayo Amusa
She started acting in 2002 and majored only in Yoruba films until a few years ago when she broke into Nollywood.
5. Iyabo Ojo
Just like Funke Akindele, Iyabo launched her career in 1998 with a Nollywood film. However, she focused on Yoruba movies and returned to the Nollywood scene a few years ago.
