It’s easy to feel like you don’t have control over your breakouts. But the fact is, you do in most cases. Our skin is a reflection of our overall health, which is why glowing, beautiful skin is a result of proper care, hydration and eating a nutrient-dense diet.
You might think because you’re grown up and have left puberty behind, you can’t get breakouts, but you still can! Breakouts are mainly caused by the overproduction of oil-blocked hair follicles. These hair follicles don’t allow the oil to leave the pore, often resulting in a clogged pore. A clogged pore allows for bacteria to grow and leads to nasty pimples. You could also be breaking out due to changes in your hormone levels, like menopause or stopping birth control pills.
Tired of pimple popping and frustrating acne? We’ve got 8 remedies that could help.
1. Don’t touch the face
The trouble with continuously touching your face is that, along with potentially smudging your makeup, you’re essentially transferring dirt and bacteria from your hands to your face, which can lead to dirty, clogged pores.
2. Keep your face clean
It’s important to wash your face twice daily to remove impurities, dead skin cells and extra oil from your skin’s surface. It’s best to use warm water and a mild facial cleanser.
When buying moisturisers, look for ‘non-comedogenic’ on the label, which means it will not clog pores. There are moisturisers made for oily, dry or combination skin.
4. Cut out or reduce the sugar in your diet
Limit it to once a week. Sugar is a huge culprit as it spikes your insulin, which in turn revs your hormones and the adrenal glands. So keep the sugar intake minimal.
5. Clean your brushes regularly
Makeup brushes and applicators should be cleaned at least once per week. These tools harbour bacteria and yeast, which can infect and irritate your skin.
6. Add turmeric to your diet
Tumeric has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties that may reduce redness and inflammation of acne. You can try adding this spice to your eggs at home.
Sweat detoxifies the skin and those who work out at least 3 days a week are more likely to choose healthier foods
8. Clean up!
Wipe your cell phone, glasses, sunglasses, keyboards, with a device-friendly anti-bacterial wipe, and launder your pillowcases weekly.
