The World Championships in Budapest saw a frightening event on Wednesday, June 22, when American artistic swimmer Anita Alvarez passed out in the water.

After collapsing in the pool, Alvarez was in danger of drowning and needed to be saved by her coach, four-time Olympic medalist in synchronized swimming Andrea Fuentes.

Seeing Alvarez plummet to the bottom of the pool at the conclusion of her performance, Fuentes jumped into the water without a second thought.

Before Alvarez received medical assistance from paramedics and was taken away on a stretcher, she carried Alvarez to the top and gave her CPR.

Alvarez reportedly lost consciousness in a pool for the second time last year, but Fuentes was able to save her during an Olympic qualification event.

On Wednesday, June 22, Fuentes claimed the situation could have gone far worse than it did.

“Anita is much better, she is already at her best. It was a good scare, to be honest.

“I jumped into the water again because I saw that no one, no lifeguard, was jumping in. I got a little scared because she wasn’t breathing, but now she’s fine. She has to rest.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Artistic Swimming Instagram page has released a statement confirming that the 25-year-old athlete is better now.
