…Ibiyemi makes case for Oyetola

By Ayo Fadimu

Panic over a possible loss of Osun governorship elections slated for September 22 has gripped the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after the party lost Ekiti governorship election to Dr Kayode Fayemi, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The election results as it was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that Fayemi won 11 out of the 16 Local Government Areas of the state, polling 197,459 votes, and edging out his closest rival Olusola Eleka who got 178,121 votes by 19,338 votes.

Nigerian NewsDirect gathered that the top hierarchy of the party have been panicky since the announcement of INEC which declared Fayemi winner.

“If Ekiti State which has powerful governor like (Ayo) Fayose can be lost to APC, who is in Osun to lead the squad for PDP” a chieftain of the umbrella party told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity.

“We saw the brutal use of Federal power in Ekiti and we are sure that such machinery would be unleashed on Osun” he added.

However, he believed that with credible and popular candidate, the party can still win the election.

“I am sure the will of the people can still prevail” he said.

In the meantime, a governorship aspirant under the platform of APC in Osun State but has dropped his ambition to support the candidature of the Chief of Staff to the governor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola has advised other APC aspirants to bury their ambition in the interest of the party and support Oyetola.

Ibiyemi at a press briefing in Abuja said that long years of working together with governor of State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola stands Oyetola out.

“Oyetola’s ideology and strategies are similar to mine but his experience as the Chief of Staff to Gov Aregbesola placed him in the  best position among all aspirants to sustain and build on the legacies of Aregbesola particularly on infrastructure, agriculture and industrial revolution,” he said.

Ibiyemi assured: “I have promised to offload details of my programme and goodwill to support Oyetola in ensuring success of Oyetola during the primary election and subsequently at the governorship election. I am ready and committed to use  my time and resources to support the victory of Oyetola in  recognition of his plans to use experts in all areas   within the party to govern State of Osun”.

He urged other governorship aspirants to appreciate merit and experience of Oyetola  as the qualities needed by APC to defeat the opposition. “My fellow aspirants should follow my step by coming together to support Oyetola so as not to provide opportunity for the opposition led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This contest should not be a do-or-die affair. The unity of all aspirants  of APC  as a family is needed to ensure the victory of Oyetola. Zoning is not in the constitution of APC and should not be allowed to create disunity among party leaders and members,” he suggested.

In a . development, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Prince Abimbola Oyinlola, has lamented the loss the party suffered at the just concluded Ekiti State Governorship election which saw the All Progressives Congress’ candidate, Dr Kayode Fayemi, coasting home to victory.

To avoid the same pitfalls in Osun PDP, especially with the state governorship election slated for September, this year, around the corner, Oyinlola warned of the dire consequences of fielding an unpopular candidate to face the APC at the polls.

“What has happened in Ekiti State Governorship election, especially as we gear up for our own primary aimed at electing a candidate that will fly our party’s flag at the coming polls, should be an eye opener to all of us”

In a statement on Sunday, Oyinlola noted that though all the aspirants eyeing the coveted governorship seat were qualified, not all of them were popular with the electorate who are the eventual voters.

“Seriously, our take home lessons from the Ekiti loss, should be a deep reflection and how we can avoid the same mistakes. The only antidote that can guarantee us victory at the coming polls, is the presentation of a popular and acceptable candidate to the voting populace” he admonished.
