Cardi B Is The First Solo Female Artist To Win A Best Rap Album Grammy Award – ZUMI

Published

Roughly two years after reaching the mainstream audience with her breakout single, “Bodak Yellow”, Cardi B has once again made history at the 61st Grammy Awards.

At the just-concluded Recording Academy Awards show, Cardi B became the first solo female artist to win the ‘Best Rap Album’ award for her debut album, Invasion Of Privacy. Although Lauryn Hill was the first woman to ever win in the category with The Fugees in 1997,  Cardi is the first solo act to win the male-dominated category, which has featured very few female nominees like Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliot and Iggy Azalea.

To win the award, she beat out other hip-hop heavyweights like Pusha T, Travis Scott, Nipsey Hussle and the dearly-departed, Mac Miller.

Receiving the award, she thanked her team and all the artists who featured on her album, and also gave a massive shoutout to her daughter, Kulture, who was conceived right before she finished putting her album together. After realizing Mac Miller’s family rooted for her to win, she promised to share the album with him in her celebratory Instagram post.

Although we didn’t get a Nigerian Grammy winner this year, Seun Kuti and his wife also showed up and showed out on the Grammy red carpet. Other notable winners include Beyonce and Jay-Z Carter, who won the Best Urban Contemporary Album award for their joint album, Everything Is Love and Childish Gambino who swept three awards for his politically charged single, “This Is America“.
