The governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, shortly after the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on Tuesday stated that the 31 January deadline for the collection of old naira notes remains sacrosanct.

Emefiele’s statement came after the National Assembly deliberated on the need for the apex bank to extend the collection of the old naira notes to June in view of the rush with which the policy is being implemented and how the rural and unbanked communities would suffer the consequences.

It could be recalled that last year, the CBN announced its decision to redesign the N200, N500 and N1000 notes in its quest to move the country to a cashless economy.

Though the policy has continued to generate mixed reactions from Nigerians, it has the blessing of Mr President. There is no gainsaying the fact that the policy is a big blow to money launderers, kidnappers and vote/voters’ buyers.  However, it has come at the wrong time. Majority of Nigerians do not have bank accounts and 80 percent of transactions in the country are cash backed.

Besides, lack of good network systems coupled with erratic power supply have made electronic banking services across the country, especially in rural areas, more difficult and unreliable to Nigerians.

The CBN’s January deadline is like putting a cart before the horse. While the grace period granted to Nigerians to deposit their old notes was 90 days; there was inadequate enlightenment and sensitization campaign not only by the CBN but also by other government agencies such as the National Orientation Agency to enable Nigerians to be abreast of the policy.

APC Denies Targeting Ganduje for Presidency in Viral Update

Latest Politics updatein nigeria

Ganduje

The ruling All Progressives Congress has distanced itself from the report credited to its Kano State chapter of the party that the Presidency may have been behind the move to remove the National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, from office.

The National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Felix Morka, made the rebuttal when he was featured as a guest on Arise TV on Thursday.

The Kano APC through its spokesperson, Ahmad Aruwa, had on Wednesday accused the Presidency of undermining and conspiring against the APC national chairman.

Aruwa made the claims in a viral Update circulating on social media where he blamed some forces in the presidency for Ganduje’s travail.

The Kano APC also criticised President Bola Tinubu for not publicly speaking up for the embattled party national chairman, saying Ganduje personally facilitated his presence in Kano even when some grassroots politicians rejected him.

Reacting, Morka said much as he couldn’t tell the context in which Aruwa made the claim, it was a true reflection of things.

Court Upholds Ganduje’s Suspension As APC Chairman

Latest Politics updatein nigeria

A High Court in Kano State has issued an ex parte order, restraining the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, from acting as the National Chairman and member of the party.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the court ruled that Ganduje should refrain from presiding over the affairs of the National Working Committee of the party, pending the determination of the substituted motion of his suspension.

The order was granted by Justice Usman Malam Na’abba on Wednesday, following an ex parte motion filed by Dr Ibrahim Sa’ad, on behalf of two executive members of Ganduje’s ward in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area. The plaintiffs were part of the nine ward executives who suspended Ganduje.

The court also directed the APC NWC, APC Kano State Working Committee (KSWC), and Ganduje, to maintain the status quo ante bellum as of 15th April 2024, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit on 30th April 2024.

The court further held that the State Working Committee must not interfere with the legally and validly considered decision of the executives of Ganduje’s ward, essentially on action endorsed by a third majority of the executives as provided by the party constitution.

The matter has been adjourned till April 30th for a hearing.

You May Meet Bobrisky In Prison, PDP Chieftain Taunts Yahaya Bello

Latest Politics updatein nigeria

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), House of Representatives candidate for Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency in the 2023 elections, Austin Okai, has slammed embattled former Kogi governor Yahaya Bello for preventing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from prosecuting him over alleged theft of N84bn from the coffers of the state.

Okai’s reaction came on the heels of the declaration by the former governor that the EFCC had disobeyed a court order by attempting to arrest him to answer the charge of the alleged N84bn theft.

Okai, in a post Thursday morning, said Yahaya Bello might likely end up in prison like Bobrisky (Nigerian crossdresser) despite his attempts to evade arrest.

“They have prepared the worse sides of prison for him and he may even meet Bobrisky there,” he wrote.

Recall that operatives of the EFCC on Wednesday barricaded the Abuja home of Bello.

The house of the former governor, who has been having a running battle with the EFCC before finishing his tenure as governor in January, is located on Benghazi Street in Wuse Zone 4, Federal Capital Territory.
