Losing their friendship is NOT the worst that can happen…
If you’re crushing on a friend and in total turmoil over what to do, let me start by saying you are not alone. I’m pretty sure we’ve all been there.
When you spend a lot of time with someone who is there when you cry and laugh and go crazy … things can start to get confusing. You know you like them (duh-they’re your friend) but then it’s all about figuring out if you like them or … you know … LIKE THEM.
First, you probably looked for some signs that they might like you back. And at some point, it hits you (probably as you’re listening to a song or watching some couple on tv) and you realize “OMG. This isn’t going away!”
Then the real dilemma comes in: Should you tell them? And if you are like any other person who has liked their friend, you’ve probably been going back and forth between saying something or not saying something …. And yes, some people have these romantic stories of marrying their best friend but does that mean you should take the risk? Every time you choose on one path, the other one seems a much better option and more often then not, the cons tend to outweigh the pros.
But we are here to help you get over your reasons not to say something … after all, it could be the beginning of a VERY awesome future together:
1. You’ll be playing them a HUGE compliment.
Honestly, they should be nothing but honored (ok, and maybe a little awkward).
There is no higher compliment you can pay someone than saying I like you. You’re telling someone “hey, I like you. I think you’re an amazing, kind, wonderful person who I am attracted to and who I could possibly want to spend the rest of my life with”. If they think you are crazy for giving them such a compliment, they are clearly idiots and you are better off without them.
2. You’ll see what kind of friend they TRULY are.
Seriously. Think about it. The worst thing that can happen is you tell them and they don’t want to be your friend anymore. Do you really want to be friends with someone who cannot handle when you pay them such a compliment?
The flip side is the best that can happen: you guys go out fall madly in love and see where it goes from there….just saying.
3. You won’t spend your life wondering what could’ve been.
Ok time for some honesty: it will be awkward for a bit. There is no denying it. Until you both find your way back to friendship zone, it might be a little weird. But if they are a good friend, you will quickly slip into your old habits and it can be something you both joke about down the road. If you go back to acting like you always had, and they still can’t handle your admission, then chances are they aren’t the kind of friend worth having.
You will feel better once you say something. If you say something, you will never look back at this moment as a “what if?” Instead, you will be able to move on either by dating them or getting over them. Either way, it all starts with telling them how you feel.
