Death row inmate chooses to be executed by firing squad over the electric chair

A man sentenced to death in South Carolina has chosen to be executed by firing squad rather than the electric chair, which would make him the first death row inmate to die by firing squad in the state.
Richard Bernard Moore, 57, would also be the first person executed in South Carolina in more than a decade, as the state has struggled to procure the drugs required to perform lethal injection.
Moore, who was sentenced to death for the 1999 murder of a convenience store clerk, is set to be executed on April 29.
In a court filing Friday, Moore chose to die by firing squad but added in a statement he will not lose hope in two pending court challenges to the constitutionality of the state’s death penalty methods.
“I believe this election is forcing me to choose between two unconstitutional methods of execution, and I do not intend to waive any challenges to electrocution or firing squad by making an election,” he said in the statement.
He did not have the option of choosing lethal injection, as South Carolina does not have the necessary drugs, according to the filing. The department previously told CNN the state has not been in possession of a usable dose of lethal injection drugs since 2013.
Lindsey Vann, one of Moore’s attorneys, told CNN Friday they have asked the state Supreme Court to put the execution on hold in order to give them time to appeal his conviction to the US Supreme Court.
Last year, the South Carolina legislature passed a law which made electrocution the state’s primary execution method, though death row prisoners have the option to choose a firing squad or lethal injection instead if the options are available.
On April 6, the South Carolina Supreme Court denied an appeal by Moore which argued his death sentence was disproportionate to penalties imposed in similar cases.
Moore’s attorneys previously filed for a stay of his execution in 2020, arguing the state was trying to carry out his execution under a “veil of secrecy midst a global pandemic” and pointing to other states who have delayed executions due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was denied.
South Carolina is one of four states, including Oklahoma, Mississippi and Utah, allowing executions by firing squad.

I’m proud of Bello’s development records in Kogi – Hafsat Abiola

Factual Pursuit of Truth for Progress
Ms Hasfat Abiola-Costello, the Director-General, Yahaya Bello Presidential Campaign Organisation, has said she will stand with Governor Yahaya Bello (GYB) of Kogi State in the race for the APC presidential ticket and not South West aspirants.
Abiola-Costello said she is throwing her weight behind Bello because she had seen in him, qualities of the kind of leader Nigeria needed at this point in time.
She said this on Monday while addressing newsmen in Lagos ahead of the APC presidential primaries slated for May 30 and 31, in Abuja.
Abiola-Costello, daughter of the winner of the 1993 presidential election, late Chief MKO Abiola, said she chose Bello over all other South West aspirants because she had seen in him, a true commitment to the progress of the country.
She also said she is proud of the governor’s records in Kogi.
Abiola-Costello, however, said Bello was a loyal and respectful person, who would carry everyone along after he emerged.
On the economy, she noted that statistics from the World Bank on states’ accountability rating in Nigeria indicated that Kogi ranked top among other states in the country.
She said: “This is a man who met a debt profile of about N135 billion in Kogi when he assumed office in 2016 but had been able to reduce it to about N70 billion.
“This is in addition to his huge investments in education, agriculture, security and infrastructural developments.
“The World Bank accountability ranking of states in Nigeria evaluated Kogi as second in 2017, first in 2020 and 2020.
“The draft report for 2020 shows that Kogi scored 100 per cent in all the areas and from indications, the state will maintain the first position in 2021, judging from the draft report that was released just yesterday.
“I am proud of Bello because of his development records in Kogi. This is a governor that is always looking for progress and the development of the lives of his people.
“This is me, a Yoruba, supporting someone from North Central.
“There is no progress without demands, I lost both my parents, though unfortunately because Nigerians believed in them. I’ve been working with GYB for a while and I have seen that he has the courage and intelligence to deliver Nigeria.”
She said as one of the foremost presidential aspirants of the party, Bello had reached out to party stakeholders in nearly all parts of the country, adding that he stood a better chance to clinch the party’s ticket than others. (NAN)

Kano prison official allegedly kills trader over cigarette

A yet-to-be-identified official of the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre in Kano has allegedly killed a trader who refused to give him a stick of cigarette.
DailyTrust reports that there was a misunderstanding between the duo after the trader refused to sell the cigarette to the officer.
“We can’t really say, but, it seemed like the officer was owing the trader and this time around, he refused to sell to him which triggered his response as he suddenly shot him,” a witness said
It was gathered that the bullet that was fired at the trader went through his stomach and hit another person on his leg.
The victims were thereafter rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano where the trader was confirmed dead.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the police are still trying to ascertain the identity of the slain trader.
The correctional center is yet to comment on the incident.
