30 years after the iconic Coming To America hit the big screens, its sequel has now been confirmed to be in the works.
As at the time the sequel was announced in 2017, Eddie Murphy’s role in Coming To America 2 was uncertain. The actor has now confirmed his return to the film as he will be reprising his role as Prince Akeem Joffer. Some of the other returning cast members include Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, John Amos and James Earl Jones.
The sequel follows up to the original film, where Prince Akeem goes all to the way to America to find a bride. In the upcoming film, however, Akeem will travel back to America in search of his long lost son, the heir to the throne of Zamunda.
Even though this movie is one of the most popular representations of Africa at the time, we can’t forget its problematic depiction of actual Africans. We also haven’t forgiven the writers for basing the story on a nonexistent African country (Zamunda) when they could’ve done a more realistic job in portraying our continent (Africans don’t exactly sing and dance with lions and giraffes, people!)
Nevertheless, we’re holding our breaths on this since the sequel will be written by Black-ish creator and Girls Trip screenwriter, Kenya Barris.
