Edo 2020: Obaseki in Trouble As Court Bars Him from PDP Primary Poll

Obaseki

Ahead of Thursday’s governorship primary election for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has barred Governor Godwin Obaseki from participating in the exercise.

Obaseki recently defected to PDP after resigning his membership from the All Progressives Congress (APC) because he was not certified to contest under the party that gave him first term ticket.

The court documents show that the suit was instituted by one of the governorship aspirants on the PDP, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who had vowed not to step down for Obaseki, praying that the court to stop Obaseki from participating in the primary on several grounds.

One of the reasons tendered by Ogbeide-Ihama was that Obaseki recently joined the party and that only those who purchased the forms during the stipulated window before the waiver granted Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, should be allowed to partake in the primaries.

He also questioned the validity of Obaseki’s certificates, which was the main reason he was disqualified by the APC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had fixed the governorship election for September 19, 2020.

The intrigue concerning this is still unfolding as there has been no comment from Obaseki’s camp yet. He is expected to appeal the order and participate in Thursday’s exercise.
