FG Considering 2024 Budget Review – Wale Edun

Federal government of Nigeria has said it will return to the National Assembly for appropriation of extra revenue in 2024 if the country records a solid revenue performance.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Wale Edun said this when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance, led by Sani Musa.

Two weeks ago, President Bola Tinubu presented a N27.5 trillion budget proposal for 2024 to the National Assembly.

Speaking on the development, Edun said the revenue performance of the country is encouraging, adding that “it is expected to continue”.

The Minister said, “There is a fiscal policy and tax reform committee that is already at work.

“It is meant to provide fundamental change together with digitalisation and greater efficiency in collection because it is revenue-to-debt that can allow us to increase this budget.

“If we have a solid revenue performance, we will come back, and I’m sure Mr President will authorize the process to return to the national assembly to appropriate extra revenue. That is a situation we are all looking forward to.”

He stated that to boost capital spending in the budget 2024 budget, the federal government is seeking ways to expedite the procurement process.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the governors of the 36 states of the Federation, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over their failure to account for, and publish the agreements of the N5.9 trillion and $4.6 billion loans obtained by their states and the FCT, respectively.

The suit, numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/592/2024 was filed on Friday on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers – Kolawole Oluwadare, Kehinde Oyewumi and Valentina Adegoke, at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The statement, which was made available to the media on Sunday, asked the court to “direct and compel the governors and Mr. Wike to account for N5.9trn and $4.6bn loans obtained by their states and the FCT and to publish copies of the loan agreements, location of projects executed with the loans.”

The suit is a sequel to SERAP’s demand which was addressed to the 37 respondents in a statement issued by the organisation’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare on March 31, 2024.

In the statement, SERAP urged the court to “direct and compel the governors and Mr. Wike to invite the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to investigate the spending of all the loans obtained to date by their states and the FCT.”

SERAP is arguing that “it is in the public interest to grant the reliefs sought. Nigerians have the right to see and scrutinise the loan agreements and know the details of how the domestic and external loans obtained by the governors and FCT minister are spent.

Mohbad’s PA, Interrogated by Police Over Late Singer’s Embalment – Lifestyle Nigeria

The Nigeria Police Force has interrogated Darosha, the personal assistant to the late singer Mohbad, over the controversial embalment of the deceased.

According to Punch Newspapers, Darosha was invited to the Zone 2 Command headquarters on Thursday, where he was questioned in the presence of Mohbad’s parents.

The police investigation is in response to a petition filed by Emmanuel Oroko of Hillceetee Partners on behalf of Mohbad’s father. The petition alleges that Mohbad’s body was embalmed without authorization from his family or a death certificate from a medical practitioner.

During the interrogation, Darosha named those present when the deceased was embalmed, and the police have invited them for further questioning. The embalment was said to have violated the Coroner’s System Law 2007, which prohibits tampering with a dead body without proper authorization.

Mohbad’s father had earlier alleged that his son’s body was already embalmed and placed by the staircase when he arrived at the deceased’s home on the day of his death. He has called on the police to intensify their investigation to unravel the cause of his son’s death.

The police investigation is ongoing, and those mentioned in Darosha’s statement are expected to appear before the investigation panel to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death and embalmment.
