Rivers Lawmakers Open Another Front In Fight With Fubara Over LG Promotion – Lifestyle Nigeria

The Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petitions, and Conflict Resolution of the Cross River State House of Assembly has called for the dissolution of the State Civil Service Commission due to large-scale misconduct.

The report also uncovered how the commission promoted an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) staff from Grade Level 5 to 15 after only five years in service.

Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Committee and member representing Abi State Constituency, Davies Etta, informed the Assembly that although the Commission had the Governor’s approval to carry out promotions, it did not follow the required procedures in some cases.

The lawmaker added that the Commission failed in its advisory role as a body that is supposed to uphold the Public/Civil Service Rules. The lawmakers expressed disappointment over the conduct of the Civil Service Commission.

However, the Assembly wants the Governor to consider Commissioners 1 and 3, namely, Mr. Martin Usibe and Chief Ita Onoyom Ette, respectively, for reappointment into the Commission when it is reconstituted, having been absolved of any breach of conduct from their investigations.

The House also recommended that the next commission continue with the promotions of civil servants as earlier approved by the state governor based on the existing promotion protocols to avoid disrepute to the commission.

Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, said the Commission acted wrongly in the discharge of its duty. Governor Otu, in a letter dated March 13, 2024, sought the power of the House to remove the Chairman and members of the civil service commission.

Mutfwang Harps On Alliance With United States To tackle

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has underscored the importance of strengthening the strategic alliance between the United States and Nigeria to tackle the current security challenges in some regions of Nigeria.

Governor Mutfwang, part of a delegation of Nigerian Governors, spoke at a dialogue on Peace and Security in Nigeria hosted at the United States Institute of Peace.

He appreciated the pragmatic leadership style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has shown political will in addressing the inherited security challenges and appealed to citizens and the security agencies to redouble their efforts in discharging their constitutional responsibility.

The symposium, with the theme “Drivers of Insecurity and Opportunities for Stabilization,” aims at deepening understanding of the security context, including its socio-economic dimensions, and identifying near-term opportunities for addressing instability.

Governor Mutfwang commended the United States Government, particularly the United States Institute of Peace, for its stabilisation support through various interventions, especially those focused on strengthening the capacity of peace actors through the Nigerian Network of Facilitators.

He expressed optimism that the lessons learned would contribute to addressing decades of security challenges in Nigeria and Plateau State in particular.

The Vice President of the Africa Centre at the US Institute of Peace, in his opening remarks, appreciated the Nigerian Governors for attending the symposium and urged them to apply the lessons learned in their respective states.

Other Governors present at the dialogue included Senator Uba Sani (Kaduna), Alhaji Abba Yusuf (Kano), Alh Nasir Idris (Kebbi), Alh. Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Alh Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Hon. Mohammed Bago (Niger), and the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State.

Why I Was Against My Son Playing Chess – Record-Breaker, Tunde Onakoya’s Dad Recounts (Update)

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that Pa Onakoya, the father of Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya, has revealed that he wasn’t initially in support of his son playing chess.

He admitted that when Tunde was a child, he used to disrupt his chess games to make him focus on his education.

The proud father disclosed this in a sideline interview with City Edge TV when he joined his wife and many others at Lagos airport on Wednesday, to give the Guinness World Record-breaker a heroic welcome.

He said, “To me, Babatunde Onakoya is an angel because whatever he set his mind on you must succeed.

“As a small child, when Tunde was playing chess, I usually packed everything away from him because I wanted him to focus on school. I didn’t know that it was what would made him popular like this.

“My advice for parents is that they shouldn’t to discourage their children from their passions. I wanted Tunde to be a doctor but I didn’t know that chess would make him popular like this. I thank God.”
