As we celebrate remarkable dads across the world we are also reminded about dads who do not step up to their responsibility and are absent in the lives of their kids.

Studies have repeatedly shown that children without fathers positively present in their lives during formative years such a child suffer greatly from masculine presence. Even before a child is born, their father’s attitudes regarding the pregnancy, behaviors during the prenatal period, and the relationship between the father and mother may indirectly have adverse effect on the birth outcomes.

Former President George W. Bush even addressed the issue while in office, stating, “Over the past four decades, fatherlessness has emerged as one of our greatest social problems. We know that children who grow up with absent fathers can suffer lasting damage. They are more likely to end up in poverty or drop out of school, become drug addicts, Have a child out of wedlock themselves, or end up in prison. Fatherlessness is not the only cause of these things, but modern society must recognize it is an important factor.”

Children with absent fathers have a deep hurt and pain they carry around and as they grow the absence of a father figure begins to reflect in every aspect of their life. There is a father’s approach to parenting and it’s effect on the child’s development. Dads who are present and constantly involved in their child’s care are more likely to have children that are securely attached, better able to handle strange situations, more resilient in stressful situations, and more curious and eager to explore their environment.

In the academic world, fathers help their kids with school work, participate in their school activities but kids who do not have this experience, often during their formative years get the feeling of neglect, abandonment. In the social sphere, such kids might find it hard to interact with others as their interaction is often limited to certain aspects.

These kids watch their fathers as they grow seeing them handle issues and automatically pick-up certain types of problem-solving skills. In modern times we have more cases of absent fathers and it is alarming the children that might emerge from these homes and the impact of the absence of a father figure in such a kids live might translate on the society.
