Asaro (not the Asaro mud men) or porridge yam or yam porridge/pottage as a lot of us know it is a delicious dish made from yam tuber. This dish is popular among the Yoruba’s, I can’ t pin point the exact tribe this dish originated from but it is popular in the south although in other tribes it shows up as well but there is of course the difference in the input and output.Every food deserves tender love and care (TLC), you need to realize that the effort you put into the cooking of any meal would reveal itself in how good the meal taste. This means you need to take good care when you are preparing this meal because any little mistake can cost you.
Now that I’ve given you the scope, don’t be afraid because the asaro is really easy to prepare all you need to do is get the right ingredients and follow the recipe. Below is a list of items that you’ll need
What you’ll need;
- Half (1/2) Tuber of yam
- 1 red bell pepper
- Medium sized onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- Powdered ginger or 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- 3 plum tomatoes
- 4 scotch bonnet pepper (or as you can handle)
- Seasoning Cube
- Salt to taste
- Smoked Fish
- Ground cray fish
- Diced Meat (optional)
- 1/2 cup Palm oil

Ummm looks delicious, you can serve this dish with peppered chicken, fish, meat and spicy tomato hot sauce (ata din din) or normal stew. This meal is ideal for the family and its a lunch time delight.
Note: Some tribes add a little bit of sliced pumpkin leaf to add more vitamins and color to the dish, this is an addition you can try if you’ve never tried it before.
