Marcos Rojo’s 87 minutes strike threw Nigeria out of the ongoing world cup. After 1-1 score that nearly took Nigeria to the second round spot of the Russia 2018 world cup, the Argentine defender struck to make the scoreline 2-1.
Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi had put Argentina in the front in the 17 minutes when he beat Nigeria defender Kenneth Omuruo and placed the ball at the far right of the Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho.
Super Eagles won a penalty a few minutes into the second half when Leaon Balogun was brought down in the 18 yard of the Argentines.
It was quickly converted by Chelsea right fullback, Victor Moses. Nigeria played defensively throughout the second half and was able to curtail the rampaging Argentina until the 87 minutes that Rojo struck to deny the former African champions the opportunity to progress.
However, some Nigerian fans had said the performance of the Eagles was not too bad but expressed their displeasure with some of the players who wasted the chance to beat Argentina.
They singled out Odion Ighalo who failed to convert the one-on-one with Argentina goalkeeper. They also blamed the Turkish centre referee who denied the Eagles a penalty.
