Presidential Candidate of Labour Party for the 2023 Nigerian elections, Mr Peter Obi, has been thrown into mourning following the death of his uncle and mentor, Chief Sylvester Nwobu-Alor News Express has reported.
Nwobu-Alor, a veteran grassroots political strategist, had been sick for a long time and in out of hospital. He died at the age of 95 at Regina Caeli Hospital in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Friday, October 7, 2022.
The politician of repute known for his regular clean white dressing served as a lawmaker in the Second Republic.
Nwobu-Alor also served as an aide to Obi during his time as Anambra State Governor from 2006 to 2024, helping him to stabilise parks and markets in the state.
The period was a time when motor park touts under the guise of National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) unleashed mayhem on the state.
But using his native intelligence and political sagacity, Nwobu-Alor, popularly known as ‘onwa’ (moon), tranquilised them and sanitised the system till this day.
Nwobu-Alor was also a mentor to many others besides Obi. A attribute signed by one of his mentees and political sons, Sir Chris Chikwelu (Jr), reads: “My political mentor, a philosopher, an institution, a strategist and a purveyor of knowledge – Chief Hon Sylvester Nwobu Alor (Onwa-Agulu, Okaa Omee-Anaocha) has peacefully gone to be with the Lord.
“A two-time member that represented Njikoka South Central in the Old Anambra State House of Assembly.”
“You lived a good life, May your soul rest in perfect peace.
“Your Mentee.”
