The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) plea to have the Supreme Court reinstate the nullification of former Osun governor Gboyega Oyetola and his deputy’s participation in the governorship election held on July 16, 2022, has been rejected.
A five-person Supreme Court panel led by Justice Centus Nweze ruled that the PDP’s appeal was not valid and told the PDP’s lawyer, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, to pull it.
The court said that, under the law, the PDP couldn’t question how Oyetola and Alabi became candidates for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled on September 30, 2022, that Oyetola and Alabi couldn’t run for governor because their nomination forms were signed by Mai Mala Buni, who was the governor of Yobe State at the time and also the acting chairman of APC.
In December of last year, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned Justice Nwite’s decision. The PDP then went to the Supreme Court to appeal this decision.
