PDP moves to replace Governor Matawalle with his Deputy for defecting to APC

Days after the Peoples Democratic Party obtained a court judgement which sacked David Umahi as Governor of Ebonyi state for defecting to the All Progressives Congress, the opposition party is now seeking the removal of Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara for similar action.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed April 7 for hearing of PDP’s lawsuit against the Zamfara Governor. The PDP is asking the court to declare impeached Deputy Governor Mahdi Aliyu Gusau as the duly elected governor of Zamfara State.
In the originating summons by its lawyer, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), PDP is seeking a declaration that sequel to the Supreme Court judgement of 2020 in APC and another Senator Kabiru Marafa and 179 others, only members of the PDP, including Matawalle then, were entitled to hold the office of the governor and deputy governor or member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly “or occupy any position or seat as a senator or member of the House of Representatives of the Nigerian National Assembly for the purpose of representing any senatorial district or electoral constituency in Zamfara State for the period beginning from May 29, 2020 and ending May 28, 2023.”
PDP is also asking the court to sack about 37 members of the National Assembly and the state assembly who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Justice Inyang Ekwo on Thursday March 10, fixed the suit following an application for joinder and the submissions of lawyers in the matter.
Lawyers to the defendants led by Mike Ozekhome (SAN) have asked for an extension of time to file their responses to the matter.

Court dissolves marriage over doubtful paternity

An Igando Customary Court in Lagos State has ordered the dissolution of the marriage between Mr. Jose Salami and Mrs. Sola Jaiyeola, on grounds of the doubtful paternity of their only child.
Vanguard reports that in a petition filed before the court, Salami, a resident of Number 9, Bakare St., Igando, Lagos State, said he doubted the paternity of the only child produced by the union.
“In March 2013, she said she was a month pregnant for me; so, I arranged for a traditional marriage to be done. But to my surprise, my wife put to bed in July of that same year, and when I asked how possible it was, she waived it aside.
The petitioner said that later, she told him to move on with his life as she was no longer interested in the marriage. He urged the court to dissolve the marriage, saying that he was approaching 50 years of age and needed to move on.
In his judgment, the President of the court, Adeniyi Koledoye, said that it appeared the love between the couple had since perished. He noted that the respondent did not show up in court in spite of several summons.
“There is no doubt that the respondent was in another relationship from which she was pregnant, and perhaps the pregnancy was rejected and she decided to hang it on the petitioner. However, the petitioner ought to have opted out of the marriage immediately he discovered that the paternity of the child was doubtful. It is clear the petitioner was deceived into the marriage by the respondent,” the judge held
Koledoye, therefore, dissolved the marriage and ordered the respondent to pay N200,000 to the petitioner.
