While some former Generals are being detained over arms deal fraud, some other Generals still in service are busying making history. Brigadier General Cecilia U. Akagu and Brigadier General Clifford B. Wanda are named the first Nigerian married army officers to reach the same rank of Brigadier General. The power couple broke a rare record in the Nigerian army as this is the first time Nigerian army has recorded an army couple who hit the same rank. No doubt this is a laudable achievement.
The power wife Brigadier General Akagu is from Ankpa local government in Kogi State while her husband is from Enugu Ngwo in Enugu State.
Brigadier General Wanda joined the Nigerian Army in the mid-1980s, and he received training at Nigerian Military School, Zaria. Well, it is not strange to notice the dissimilarity in the last names of the couple, as some military personnel do keep their last names for administrative purposes, particularly if they met on the job. The path of the distinguished officers crossed when they were both commissioned officers and afterwards they got hitched.
Even though Brigadier General Akagu and Brigadier General Wanda are not the first commissioned officers to be married in the Nigerian Army, they are the first couple to have climbed the ladder of the rank of Brigadier General as a married couple
For better understanding, the rank of brigadier general is a senior rank in the armed forces. It is the lowest ranking general officer, usually sitting between the ranks of colonel and major-general. Since a brigadier general sits above colonel and below the rank of major-general, a brigadier general distinctively command a brigade of 4,000 soldiers in the field. A brigade general is informally designated as a one-star general in some countries.
You will agree with me that the praiseworthy achievement didn’t just happen, it rather came about through excellent and sheer hard work of the two parties in their different departments.
