According to eye witnesses, the victims were pulled out of the debris by sympathizers but died on the way to the General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta. The police arrived the scene of the incident by 9am, early enough to prevent a breakdown of law and order by youths, who became enraged on sighting the bodies. The over 70-year-old building was said to be intact and showed no sign of collapsing. Witnesses believed the heavy rain that fell the . night might have caused its collapse. A near victim, Kabirat Sonde, who was also taking her kid to school, said they escaped by the whiskers.
“I was also taking my child to school. I was behind them and a woman was in the front. It was the woman who raised the alarm immediately the incident occurred before help came. She was rescued alive and people started pouring water on her but she died on her way to the hospital. People didn’t know immediately that there was a girl trapped, it was the woman who told us but it was too late. The girl was found dead.”
