Reality TV Shows And Nigerian Youths With Misplaced Priorities

#BBNaija Shine Ya Eye….First I would say I am not against reality TV shows or musical concerts and what-a-view rather what gives reason for concern is the level of attention and interest vested in these low-yielding activities as compared to the things of larger pictures that concern the individual and collective survival of every Nigerian youth.

Reality TV Shows

Multichoice’s biggest sell over the last 3-years of predominantly Nigerian content has been the reality TV show “Big Brother Naija”, with Nigerian youths stuck in front of the TV distracted away from their realities while watching a make-believe reality.
Yes, some might say they have once made an effort for a change last year after that year’s BBNaija show ended with the #EndSARS protest, but the bad government they had shut it down. But I would reply to such a statement and say yes that movement made a mark it had a significant impact on the rogue police unit, F-SARS has been disbanded and even a new unit meant to replace it has not been kicked off yet despite talks of a new one too. \"\"READ ALSO: 10 Most Successful Big Brother Naija Contestants Till Date
The Nigerian youths need to wake up to the realities that it is their future and that of their children and that of their unborn children being toyed with, gambled, kicked around, and used as bargaining chips by these current bunch of visionless, insensitive greed political leaders in the country. Yeah, I know someone will reply we’ve heard all of this before well my reply is have you gotten your PVC in preparation of voting out these old scalawags, rather than sit behind a TV and watch someone put on an act while they fight for his/her individual success of the gain of 120 million Nigerian youth engaging in discussions on social media of no particular value, be it political nor social. \"RealityAccording to British-Nigerian youth advocate and political consultant Daniel Ogoloma, he said, “Sadly, this misplacement of priorities is not only distracting the youths from the collective goal of building a progressive nation, but it also has costly consequences which are capable of jeopardizing the future of the country if the status quo remains.”
Daniel gave the example of internet engagement by the youths. He agreed that while some young people use the internet for legal, innovative, and productive purposes, a large number of them use the same medium to perpetrate illegal activities such as internet fraud, social media trolling, and cyberbullying. While he emphasized that he has nothing against fashion and entertainment programmes like musical concerts and reality Tv shows, Ogoloma expressed his concern at the amount of involvement and level of attention invested in these activities by the youths, when compared to their lack of interest in matters like politics, leadership, education. \"\"

Ooni of Ife, sometimes last year criticized Nigerian youths, he said” Nigerian Youths need to get the priorities straight and stop watching “Reality TV Shows”
It is acknowledged the importance of entertainment but urged the youths to show the same level of interest, commitment and expend the same amount of energy given to such entertainment programmes on important socio-political issues. Most of those who come in the BBNaija shows, are more usually than ever rich kids, individuals who are based abroad, and more while you who live with your parents in a 1-room apartment join in this frivolous engagement, my brother you’re toying with the multidimensional level of poverty. \"\"
