Each year, at the South by Southwest music festival (SXSW), a careful selection of 1000 artists from over 60 countries perform in Austin, Texas.
Unlike other major music festivals, the SXSW lineup doesn’t include big names but rather, a selection of globally talented artists worth discovering. As such, this year features 12 Nigerian artists across various genres, who will take the stage in Austin between March 11-17. After three rounds of announcements, 12 of our including Simi, Adekunle Gold, Yemi Alade and Seyi Shay made the cut. However, the festival’s organisers have promised to add more performers, so we hope to see more Nigerians on the list.
While we were happy to some of our underrated faves on the list, one of the Nigerian acts that made us even more proud is the Dreamcatchers Dance Academy. It is exciting to see these school kids finally take the international stage (and secure the bag) after gaining so much social media clout with their heartwarming dance videos.
Given how widely the world seems to be consuming afropop (after taking too long to catch up to the awesome genre), it is certain that our music will once again reach a much wider audience with his festival. So far, here are the Nigerian artists on the lineup of the SXSW festival:
