Every year since 2006, The Future Awards Africa honours 20 young Nigerians who made outstanding achievement across various industries, from entertainment to tech.
In spite of the odds, young Nigerians continue to blaze the trail to make something out of a country that gives us little to nothing. In a place with a terrible supply of electricity and nose-diving economy, it is incredible how people like The Piggy Bank team and other creatives continue to entertain us and provide solutions to some of our problems.
This year’s nominations list featured some of the most inspiring young Nigerians who have made great career strides within the year, from Niniola and Maraji in entertainment to Fati Abubakar, for her documentary photography in the war-torn North East. The impressive list also featured an interestingly inclusive roll call – cutting across gender and religion, from Hauwa Ojeifo to Noni Salma.
As for the winner’s list, some of our favourite women won well-deserved plaques for their achievements in 2018. Simi, Zainab Balogun, and Nadine Ibrahim bagged awards in the acting, music and screen producing categories respectively. In other categories, women like Ayobola Kekere-Ekun, Temi Marcella Awogboro, Folu Storms and Olive Emodi won awards for Creativity, Professional Service and On-Air Personalities of the Year respectively. For tech, Odunayo Eweniyi of PiggyBank NG also won, setting the pace for other Nigerian women in the male-dominated industry.
We hope other Nigerian award shows can learn from TFAA – as they seem to be doing a good job in compiling a diverse list of well-deserved nominees and winners.
