NDLEA arrested 18,940 traffickers in 18 months – Marwa

Chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), has confirmed that the anti-narcotics agency has arrested 18,940 drug traffickers in the last 18 months.

He confirmed the arrest in Abuja on Thursday, August 18, during a one-day drug awareness conference, 2022 titled, ‘Drug and Substance Abuse: The Effect on Mental Health and National Security.’

Marwa said, ”Today, the public is familiar with NDLEA’s arrests, prosecutions, convictions and seizures. We are doing much more behind the scene.

”We are scaling up efforts for the prevention, treatment, care and rehabilitation of drug-dependent individuals in our facilities.

”In this regard, we have counselled, treated and rehabilitated not less than 12, 326 in the past 18 months.

”In collaboration with the support of UNODC we have launched standard guidelines for our counselling in all our centres.

Marwa also noted that the agency had inaugurated a drug abuse call centre with the toll-free helpline 0800-1020-3040 where drug users, their families or employers can call in for help and are offered teletherapy services by certified professionals.

”They include counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists and other mental health experts. And this is free of charge – both the call itself and the services offered are free,” he said.

He stated that NDLEA had found out that there was a strong nexus between illicit drugs and the spate of insecurity being unleashed by terrorists, bandits and other non-state destabilising actors.

Amb. Mohammed Ahmed, representing the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd), noted that the country is experiencing rising demand and trafficking of illicit drugs, adding that the ugly development had given rise to crimes, banditry, and other related security challenges.

\’I should have asked Taylor to visit his pitch-side monitor\’

Video Assistant Referee, Mike Dean, has admitted he was wron for not telling referee, Anthony Taylor to go to the pitchside monitor to review Cristian Romero’s hair pull on Marc Cucurella which could have led to a red card in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

Dean, who was the VAR for the controversial game at Stamford Bridge, decided against any punishment for Romero at the time.

Spurs defender Romero grabbed Chelsea wing-back Cucurella near the end of Sunday\’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge as Spurs striker Harry Kane nodded in from the resulting corner.

In his Daily Mail column, Dean admitted: \”No referee wants to be driving home from a game knowing they should have made a different call. Sometimes in hindsight, you realise you could have acted differently.

\”For the second goal by Harry Kane, I asked referee Anthony Taylor to wait while I looked at the incident involving Tottenham\’s Cristian Romero and Chelsea\’s Marc Cucurella.

\”I could not award a free-kick as VAR, but I could recommend to Taylor that he visit the referee review area to consider a possible red card. In the few seconds I had to study Romero pulling Cucurella\’s hair, I didn\’t deem it a violent act.

\”I\’ve since studied the footage, spoken to other referees and, upon reflection, I should have asked Taylor to visit his pitch-side monitor to take a look for himself. The referee on field always has the final say.

\”It goes to show that no matter how experienced you are, and I\’ve spent more than two decades as a Premier League official, you are always learning.

\”It\’s disappointing for me as this was one incident in an otherwise very good weekend from our officials.\”

Tottenham\’s first equaliser was also controversial with Chelsea claiming Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg\’s goal should have been disallowed for offside with Richarlison in goalkeeper Edouard Mendy\’s line of sight.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was also enraged that a foul was not given for a tackle by Rodrigo Bentancur on Kai Havertz in the build-up to the equaliser.

But Dean believes he was correct to allow the Danish midfielder\’s goal to stand.

He said: \”With the first equaliser for Tottenham by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. This one was relatively straightforward. I can\’t go back 44 seconds to look at Rodrigo Bentancur\’s potential foul on Kai Havertz. It is outside the attacking phase of play – the Tottenham player got a toe to the ball anyway – so that wasn\’t a factor in whether Hojbjerg\’s goal should stand.

\”The question was whether Richarlison was interfering from an offside position. When Hojbjerg\’s shot was struck, Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had a view of the ball for me. His line of vision wasn\’t clearly blocked, so it was onside and 1-1.\”

Dean will not be in charge of VAR for the next round of Premier League fixtures after being given the weekend off following the controversial events at Chelsea.

The 54-year-old retired from on-field refereeing at the end of last season but has remained involved with the Premier League as a VAR.

We didn\’t receive N1.15 billion worth of vehicles from Nigeria — Niger Republic

Niger Republic has denied receiving 10 vehicles allegedly purchased by the President Muhammadu Buhari government for N1.15 billion.

Recall that Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, had said on Wednesday, August 3, that the Federal Government approved the purchase and supply of 10 Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle SUVs to the neighbouring nation on August 3.

\”This is not the first time that Nigeria has supported Niger, Cameroon or Chad, and the President makes an assessment as to what is required, based on the request of their President and such requests are approved and the interventions provided is to enhance their capacity to protect their own territory as it relates to security also to Nigeria,\” Ahmed had said.

However, Nigerien Minister of Defence, Alkassoum Indatou, while speaking on behalf of the President of the Niger Republic, dismissed the claim, adding that the country received vehicles from the Zamfara State government.

\”The state of Zamfara which has given five vehicles to the Maradi region, four of which have already been received, it is not the federal government as the Minister of Finance of Nigeria Zainab Ahmed declared,\” said a translation of the French statement of a top Nigerien official familiar with the matter.

\”The populations of Zamfara who are on the border with Niger call more on the Nigerien soldiers who respond to the minute than even those of their own country.\”

Only failed leaders move around with escorts after leaving office

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has said that only failed leaders move around with security details even after leaving office.

Wike said;

“Already, I am leaving. In the next few months, I am gone but I am happy going because my people are happy I did not disgrace them.

“I am going without having any policemen following me on the streets. There is nobody that can touch me in any street because I have done what the people want me to do.

“It is only those that have failed because they haven’t done anything for their people that carry soldiers after leaving office. I don’t have one to follow me. Even if they give me, I won’t take. I want to move alone.”

The Governor who also said that his government has “changed the narrative in terms of governance”, asked the people to hold leaders accountable.

Wike said;

“So, Rivers people ask me what I am doing with my money.

“I will tell you what I am doing with my money. If we were getting the kind of money we used to get before, I would have turned this state into Dubai.

“Ask PDP in Rivers State what they have done for the people of the state. This is our campaign.

“So, when people come and ask you to vote for them, ask them: The one you went before, what happened?”

\’If you can\’t deal with the fact that you lost your woman, that\’s not my f***ing problem

Kid Cudi has slammed his former label boss Kanye West for dragging him into a public feud with his estranged wife Kim Kardashian and her now-ex boyfriend, Pete Davidson.

Recall Ye dragged Cudi for remaining loyal to Pete Davidson when he started dating the mother of his four children after their marriage packed up.

Cudi, who is the cover star of the recent issue of Esquire Magazine spoke about the online feud.

\’Do you know how it feels to wake up one day, look at your social media, and you\’re trending because somebody\’s talking some s*** about you?\’ the 38-year-old Ohio native asked.

And then you got this person\’s trolls sending you messages on Instagram and Twitter? All in your comments? That s*** pi**ed me off. That he had the power to f*** with me that week. That he used his power to f*** with me. That pi**ed me off. You f***ing with my mental health now, bro.\’

Kid (born Scott Mescudi) added: \’I\’m not one of your kids. I\’m not Kim. It don\’t matter if I\’m friends with Pete or not friends with Pete. None of this s*** had anything to do with me.

If you can\’t be a grown man and deal with the fact that you lost your woman? That\’s not my f***ing problem. You need to own up to your s*** like every man in this life has. I\’ve lost women, too. And I\’ve had to own up to it. I don\’t need that in my life. I don\’t need it.\’

Cudi used to be very close to his 45-year-old ex-mentor and they co-headlined the Glow in the Dark Tour in 2008. They also put out an album together as Kids See Ghosts in 2020.

\’I\’ve been on every one of that man\’s albums. He\’s only been on two of mine. That should tell you something,\’ the Day \’N\’ Nite hitmaker noted. \’And don\’t think I didn\’t ask.\’

Kid won his only Grammy Award for his work on Ye\’s 2011 track All of the Lights, and they were both featured on Pusha T\’s track Rock n Roll as recent as April 21.

\’I just want to clear that up for anybody that feels like Kanye made my career or made me who I am,\’ Cudi defended.

\’He brought me on to do 808s. I thought that was really f***ing awesome. I wanted to be a part of a family and saw G.O.O.D. Music as that opportunity. So I finally said yeah. Kanye West did not come and pluck me out of Applebee\’s or the Bape store.\’

The X producer-star said it would take \’a motherf***ing miracle\’ for him and West to rekindle their friendship.

\’I don\’t see it happening. [He\’d] have to become a monk,\’ Kid – who\’s battled depression – said.

\’The twisted thing is that I love him, but I love you so much that I can kick you the f*** out of my life and be done with your a** because you are not good for me. I love myself more. I love myself more. I didn\’t love myself all them years you knew me. I love myself more now, bro. I love myself way more.\’
