A recent medical research from Israel has shown that mobile phones cook men’s sperm when it is kept in the pocket of their trousers. Scientists have formerly raised concern about the use of electronic gadgets such a laptops by men and tried to find out the effects of electronic devices on fertility.
The study, conducted by highly respected specialists and published in the journal Reproductive BioMedicine, revealed that mobile phones have negative impacts on sperm as men who kept their phones in their trouser pockets during the day had their sperm levels seriously affected in 47 per cent of cases as opposed to just 11 per cent in the general population.
In the course of the study, the researchers reportedly monitored over a 100 men attending a fertility clinic for a year and they discovered that apart from men keeping their phones close to their crotch, many spoke on the phone while it was charging and kept it just a few centimeters away from their bed.

The research divulged that men who used mobile phones for more than two hours a day were twice as likely to have a lower sperm count, compared to those who used the said gadget for less than an hour. In addition, those who used phones while charging were twice as likely to have health problems.
Based on the tests, having a mobile phone close to the testicles or within a foot or two of the body can lower sperm levels so much that conceiving could be difficult. The risk according to Professor Martha Dirnfeld, of the Technion University in Haifa, Israel, is presented by the electromagnetic waves which cook up the sperms.
We analysed active sperm and found it had been reduced. We think this is being caused by heating from the phone and by electromagnetic activity.
Gedis Grudzinskas, a Fertility consultant Professor, said,
Men need to think about their wellbeing and try to stop being addicted to their phones. If you wear a suit to work put the mobile in your chest pocket instead of close to your testes. It will reduce the risk of your sperm count dropping or dropping so much.
And do you need to keep the phone right next to you on the bedside table. Some men keep their mobile in their shorts or pyjamas in bed. Is that really necessary?

According to Professor Martha,
I think this is a warning to men to change their habits to improve their chances of having children. Women generally don’t carry their mobiles on them so maybe a mobile phone won’t affect their fertility. That’s not something we have looked at.
On the contrary, some experts like Prof Alan Pacey, a fertility research scientist at Sheffield University, has dismissed the theory insisting that he will keep on putting his mobile phone in his pocket. However, Prof. Martha countered him saying that older men may not need to bother about their fertility but for the younger men, it is something to be concerned about.
She also added that:
If you are trying for a baby and it doesn’t happen within a year, you might want to think of whether it could be your mobile phone habit that is to blame.
And Graham Lamburn, of the Powerwatch research group, said the evidence of sperm reduction was “fairly compelling.”
