A body language expert, Lillian Glass, reveals a counterintuitive strategies that can make you appear more confident than you seem. Study shows that the most confident people are not only skilled at articulating their own thoughts, they’re also excellent listeners.

Glass who is an author of “The Body Language Advantage” says it is very possible to make people think you’re more confident than you actually are through body language.

Be aware of your body language when you’re speaking to someone, and utilize it to become a better listener. Here are ways you can appear more confident:

1. Groom yourself

Go the extra mile and style your hair, give yourself a clean shave. It’s amazing how much of a difference a shower and a shave can make in your feelings of self-confidence and for your self-image. You can turn your mood around with a little body pampering. Not only will this make you feel better about yourself, but others are more likely to perceive you as successful and self-confident as well.

2. Dress nicely

A corollary of the first item above … if you dress nicely, you’ll feel good about yourself. You’ll feel successful and presentable and ready to tackle the world. Now, dressing nicely means something different for everyone … it doesn’t necessarily mean wearing a million naira outfit, but could mean casual clothes that are nice looking and presentable.

3. Speak slowly

Research has proved that those who take the time to speak slowly and clearly feel more self-confidence and appear more self-confident to others. Only a person who feels that he is not worth listening to will speak quickly, because he doesn’t want to keep others waiting on something not worthy of listening to. Even if you don’t feel the confidence of someone who speaks slowly, try doing it a few times. It will make you feel more confident, but don’t take it to an extreme.

4. Stand tall

A slump posture is one of the small signs people use to judge your personality. Therefore imagine that a rope is pulling the top your head towards the sky. People who stands tall with head held high are more attractive. To be more elaborate, observe the postures of fashion models, you get it now don’t you?

5. Smile

Being confident also means you smile. Smiling will not only make you feel better, but will make others feel more comfortable around you. Imagine a person with good posture and a smile and you’ll be envisioning someone who is self-confident.

6. Maintain Eye Contact

Maintain even eye contact, display a neutral or pleasant facial expression, and mirror the other person’s movements and positioning. Lean in as they speak, never cross your arms, and give occasional nod throughout the conversation to show you’re listening.

7. Exercise

Exercise has been one of my most empowering activities in the last couple years, and it would make you feel and look much more confident than you appear on the inside. All you need is a 10 minutes or more exercise daily to help you feel and act more confident.

Other Internal Ways To Boost self confident Include:

  • Set a small goal and achieve it.
  • Focus on solutions.
  • Empower yourself with knowledge — Remember, “A reader is a Leader.”
  • Do something you’ve been procrastinating on.
  • Be active: doing something is almost always better than doing nothing.
  • Work on small things.
  • Be more practical.

Remember, “As you act, so you become. As you change your body language, so you become.” And who says you can’t practice with a standing mirror? just give it a try.
