Tobi Amusan claimed the 100m hurdles gold at the Internationales Stadionfest at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany to turn the tide in a series of bad news for Nigeria in different sports from football, athletics to volleyball last weekend.
GWG reports that the bad news was climaxed with the humiliation of Nigeria out of the 2022 CHAN by Ghana who beat Nigeria in Abuja on penalties to qualify for the tournament.
That bad news was trailed by the news that Grace Nwokocha who ran the anchor leg when Nigeria won the 100 meter women relay at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games had failed a dope test and been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). That news came with the prospect of Nigeria losing the gold and sliding in the medals table.
Besides, a day before Ghana humiliated Nigeria out of the CHAN Football tourney, another perpetual thorn in the flesh of Nigeria sports, Cameroon courtesy of their Under – 19 Girls Volleyball team beat Nigeria 3-1 in the opening match of the 2022 U-19 African Nations Volleyball Championship holding in the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match, played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, saw Nigeria team manage to win only the first set of the match by 29-27.
They were unable to win the remaining sets because the Cameroonian girls defended their supremacy in the game.
The following day, Nigerian volleyball team recorded their second consecutive defeat at the African Nations Volleyball Championship in Abuja courtesy of a 0-3 loss to Egypt.
However, Tobi Amusan brought back smiles to Nigeria sports when the 25-year-old claimed the top spot at the ISTAF 2022 Berlin meeting on Sunday, September 4.
She beat off strong competition from American Tia Jones who finished 2nd and Olympic bronze medalist Megan Tapper of Jamaica.
Tobi Amusan clocked 12.45 seconds to win gold.
GWG reports that the meet is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver level series.
Speaking after her victory, Amusan said: “It has been a long season, but I am still alive. I just wanted to finish strong today. I was here to execute.
“I need to work on what I need to work on, but it is alright. There is always room for improvement. I need to improve my start and my finish.
“I will race again in Zurich. Today we had a great competitive field. My goal was to focus on myself.”
