Movie production or filmmaking involves a number of discrete stages including an initial story, idea, or commission, through script writing, casting, shooting, sound recording and reproduction, editing, and screening the finished product before an audience that may result in a film release and exhibition. It is a great job our women in Nollywood are already getting involved in. Many would produce their movies in order to get a lead role. In this report, SAMUEL ABULUDE profiles our top female movie producers
She deserves to be called the 1st lady of the Nollywood film industry. At the early stage of nollywood where movie producers were filled with men, Amaka Igwe nee Isaac Ene was the trojan that rode the industry to an appreciable level. Late Amaka Igwe made many actors that are already veterans in the industry. Checkmate, an award winning soap opera helped to hone the skills of many actors and actresses. The thorough movie producer indeed inspired many women to try film production as well. Amaka lost her life last year while producing an Igbo drama series.
She is a Nigerian film director and producer. Her movie, ’The Meeting’ which she co-produced with Rita Dominic won several awards at Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards AMVCA 2015 as well as being nominated for Best Director award at the 4th Africa Movie Academy Awards. The Meeting was a satire that mirrors the corruption in the Nigeria civil service. Mildred Okwo and Rita Dominic own the Audrey Silver Company. Presently, a new movie, Surulere (Journey) is being shot by the production outfit. Mildred alongside eleven other Nollywood practitioners founded the Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) and it was approved by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to screen Nigerian films to be submitted for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards.
Uduak grew from being a screen writer to a movie producer. She had worked with her sister, Emem Isong in a couple of her works. The graduate of Communication Arts from University of Ibadan has her hands in movies such as Holding Hope, Bursting Out, and Champagne.
Inspired by the late Amaka Igwe, Tope Oshin-Ogun has carved a niche for herself as a producer cum director of drama series as well as movie. Tinsel drama series is one of the soaps that she has handled. Tope has produced a couple of short films as well as directing to movie, Journey To Self.
She is one of the blazing lights of the Nigerian movie industry. Having studied abroad, Michelle Aisha Bello is implementing her craft in producing award winning movies. From the short film, Small Boy to the movie, Flower Girl, the lady has done well for herself. Her company, Blue Star Entertainment has handled a couple of projects. Presently, she is working on a thriller.
From being an award winning actress, Omoni Oboli has produced two movies, Being Mrs Elliot and First Lady. The actress who has gotten credits with her roles in movies such as Anchor Baby, Figurine, Render To Caesar among other flicks is doing great with her new status as a movie producer.
Other actress who have produced their own movies include Funke Akindele, Ruke Sanda, Monalisa Chinda, Ini Edo, Fathia Balogun, Lizzy Anjonrin and others.
Emem can be referred to as the queen of romantic dramas. The plump movie producer has produced many award winning movies that x-rays different kinds of love relationship. With her Royal Arts Academy, she has helped to groom a lot of thespians. Her movie gave the likes of Nse Ikpe-Etim a breather. Emem who got married to a Cameroonian recently has taken a short at movie directing as well.
