Transfer: Why no top player wants to play Manchester United – Tom Cleverley

Former Manchester United star Tom Cleverley has said top stars once took pay cuts just to have the privilege of signing for the club.

He noted that the case is no longer the same as no one wants to come to Old Trafford.

Manchester United is far from the dominant force it used to be in the domestic and European leagues.

The Red Devils, who have 13 Premier League titles since the English top flight was rebranded in 1992, now struggle to finish fourth in the league.

Cleverley, a product of Manchester United’s famous youth academy, made 79 appearances for the first team.

Asked if it’s a shock to see where United are, Cleverley told talkSPORT, “It is, but I think Sir Alex Ferguson was a big part of that.

“People would genuinely take less money just to say that they played for Manchester United, but I think that’s slowly going now, or has gone.

“Young players are being offered so much money and it seems that their target is to get as much money as they can rather than having the prestige of playing for Manchester United.

“I never thought we’d get to this stage.”
