Heartbreaking As Mentally Challenged Woman Delivers Baby Girl In Street Of Calabar

Ejes Gist Daily Post reports that in Uwanse, Calabar South local government area of Cross River State state, a mentally and physically challenged woman gave birth to a baby girl.

On Friday evening on the streets, the woman delivered her child but was later evacuated to a government facility.

The woman who delivered the baby by herself before the good Samaritans arrived gave her name as Pretty and said she was from the state of Benue.

The Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, who was in tears, rescued the baby and the mother and said the baby was delivered by 5.30.

Dr. Ekpenyong called for more mental health awareness and for individuals to regularly check for other underlying health conditions, particularly those who have been exposed to hard drugs.

We all owe ourselves the obligation to check for our mental health, some of us are going through some stress and trauma that could lead to advanced mental health disorder if not checked on time, I want to encourage young people, particularly students, to stay away from hard drugs and addictive characters that may have adverse health effects.

We are proud that both the mother and the child have been rescued by the government, at the moment we will ensure that the baby enjoys all privileges like any other child, she has received her first doses of immunization to increase her immunity, and she has been put in the watchful eyes of health professionals.

As for the mother, we have tried to stabilize her, we have cleaned her up with a hot bath, because we know of some challenges and complications that may come with child birth, we will monitor her as long as possible to see that she is stable, we have at least given her food to increase energy level and she is already in a happy mood.

“I also want to welcome our sister agency’s effort to reach us, CUDA, which demonstrates that they have confidence in us and the ability to provide our people with compromised services, we encourage other Cross Riverians to learn from that,” she said.

He revealed his readiness to continue working with all government agencies to ensure that citizens and residents enjoy their presence at all times.

The baby, who was later named Linda Greatness after the first lady of the state,  gave cash and material gifts, including drinks, sanitary materials, among others.
