2669 Convictions Secured In Nine Months – EFCC

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has convicted 1,968 out of the 2,669 convictions secured in 2022.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the EFCC said the convicted numbers which amount to over 73 per cent, were cybercrime-related.

According to the Commission, cybercrime-related convictions range from fraud, embezzlement, misappropriation, and internet fraud to other financial impropriety carried out within public and private sectors in the country and outside Nigeria.

According to documents obtained by City Round, 1,968 cybercrime convicts were involved in various forms of internet fraud, ranging from identity theft, phishing, malware attacks, and bank fraud vishing to credit card scams, among others.

This follows protests by some youths in Ughelli, Delta, and Ibadan, Oyo states, suspected to be involved in internet fraud. They alleged clampdown by operatives of the EFCC.

In 2021, the Commission announced that as of September, 80 per cent of its 978 convictions were connected to cybercrime-related offences.

The anti-graft agency, while stating that the rise in cybercrime activities in the country was alarming and worrisome, said it resolved to leave no stone unturned in ensuring the tackling of the menace.

EFCC noted that cybersecurity experts believe that financial damages and losses could reach $6tn at the end of the year, adding that studies had shown that cyber attacks were among the fastest-growing crimes across the globe.

HURIWA Apologises To NNPCL Staff, Asabe Waziri – Lifestyle Nigeria

Civil Rights Advocacy Group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has written a letter of apology to a staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited Ms. Asabe Waziri through her private/personal counsel/Legal consultant Deji Adeyanju’s law firm, over some perceived insinuations in the FOI request bothering on alleged misconduct unbecoming of a public officer or of corruption which the Rights group has described as totally unintended.

HURIWA had written a freedom of information request to the NNPCL requesting some information on the employment status of the staff of the NNPCL but the NNPCL had swiftly responded to the FOI request declining to provide such demanded information on some legal grounds including the claim that the NNPCL is not under any obligations to disclose such personal information on their staff. HURIWA has determined that the response from NNPCL was satisfactory as it was no longer interested to pursue any further request and/or public interest action on the same subject matter. NNPCL’s reply was authored by the law firm of Chief Afe Babalola(SAN).

But following a letter from the private counsel of Ms. Waziri complaining about insinuations made in the FOI request which may have painted her client in untoward position, HURIWA therefore authored a letter of unconditional apology to the client of Deji Adeyanju law firm: Ms. ASABE WAZIRI.

Dated 26th April, 2024, HURIWA’S LETTER OF APOLOGY to Ms. Asabe Waziri stated as follows:

“On behalf of our organisation,  we write to tender our sincerest and unreserved apology to you for our decision to write to your employer.

We apologise for whatever insinuations of official misconduct unbecoming of a public officer or of corruption that may have been perceived from our FOI letter to your employer. This is totally unintended as we hold you in high esteem.

We wish to let you know that we never did that letter on behalf of anybody, but it was a decision of our organization and our intentions are of the best of intentions and not to malign or discredit you. We once more, extend to you our apology.

Whilst believing that our explanation is satisfactory, we hereby assure you of our highest honour and consideration.

Why The Witch-hunt? By Fatima Oiza Muhammed

Why The Witch-hunt? By Fatima Oiza Muhammed

As a Kogite from the Central Senatorial District of Kogi State (The Same Senatorial district Yahaya Bello is from), I can’t sit and SEE misinformation been spread everywhere as it relates to the current faceoff between the EFCC and Yahaya Bello.

I have read lots of articles and watched many interviews where people were alleging that the EFCC is witch-hunting Yahaya Bello and that the EFCC Chairman is been used by some persons in the presidency to fight Yahaya Bello..

As a kogite and a sister to Yahaya Bello who knows almost everything about this case, I have to let the world know the truth..
First of all, I would love to state that I love my brother Yahaya Bello.. I also love my people from the Central Senatorial district more than anyone else from any other senatorial district or state..

I am unapologetic about this.. However, no matter how much we love each other where I come from, there are certain acts that we all condemn and forbid.. Real Ebira Men or Women are not thieves.. We detest stealing so much that even if the thief is my twin brother, I will not hesitate to call him out and report him to the society.

We are courageous and truthful people. If an Ebira man or woman is falsely accused of stealing, they will courageously come out to clear their names because if they do not, the stealing tag will be attached to their loved ones and their generations yet unborn..

What Yahaya Adoza Bello is doing right now offends the core values of the true Ebira culture.. Guilty or not, Yahaya Bello is expected to courageously answer the allegations against him.. No matter who wants to “persecute” him, as a former Governor and a member of the Ruling party, if he is innocent, he will walk free except of course he is not.
