The Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party at the 2020 general elections, Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Peter Obi, have condemned the impeachment of the Zamfara State Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu Gusau by the State Assembly

Reacting to the development through his media office in Abuja today, the former Vice President was quoted to have said: “I am embarrassed by the trivialisation of impeachment for personal vengeance by political leaders, contrary to the intentions of the framers of our constitution.”

According to Atiku, “the ill-advised idea behind the impeachment is an affront to the ideals of democracy and human rights which, regrettably and ironically, the parliament is meant to protect.”

He warned about the dangers of toying with the constitution and using it for purposes that harm our democracy and public interest.

The Waziri Adamawa added that no one deserved to be persecuted using the instrument of the constitution for exercising his right to freedom of association or political affiliation.

On his part, Obi this afternoon said there is no constitutional basis for what happened in Zamafara, describing the entire episode as ‘toxic politics.’

While offering support to the impeached deputy governor, he noted that the action of the Assembly is a desecration of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

“The impeachment of Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau as Dep. Gov. of Zamfara has no basis in law but is predicated only on toxic politics.

“As someone who was wrongfully impeached and became the first Nigerian public officer to come back from impeachment, I can relate to this desecration of our constitutional democracy and offer my unalloyed support to him”.
