Disregard viral Update of officials driving against traffic, says LASTMA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) has urged Lagosians and other Nigerians to disregard the trending Update of its officers driving against traffic along Iyana-Oworo.

In a statement, the General Manager, LASTMA, Bolaji Oreagba, said the videoed incident occurred in 2020 before the #ENDSARs protest around Iyana-Oworo. He added that the authority had appropriately sanctioned all the officers involved.

The patrol van with registration No. RTM 08 LA (Zone 25 Bariga) seen in the viral Update was one of LASTMA operational vehicles burnt alongside its office building by #ENDSARs protesters at Iyana-Oworo, Lagos.

The agency, therefore, urged members of the public to disregard the Update that was deployed to embarrass hardworking officers.

“LASTMA will continue effective monitoring and control of traffic across the state, just as it will not condone indiscipline among any of its personnel.”

Discrimination, Killing: Outcries Over State Recognised Vigilantes

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that the security outfits established by various state governments, especially in the North-West, are being accused of indiscriminate arrests and killing of suspects, as well as innocent people without recourse to judicial processes, findings by Daily Trust Saturday revealed.

But those charged with the responsibility of managing the outfits have debunked the claims of extrajudicial killings, though some admitted what they described as “overzealousness” by some of the operatives.

It was alleged that in some states, long lists of suspected bandits, their supporters or sympathisers have been arrested and ultimately killed, and such acts are allegedly being carried out without recourse to the police and other law enforcement agencies.

So far, the Katsina State Community SEE Corps (CWC), Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG), Kaduna State Vigilantes Service (KADVIS) and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps (CGC) have been established, while Jigawa, Kano and Kebbi states are expected to form theirs soon. Kaduna State had earlier developed its own strategy, which is similar to those of the six other states.

Sadly, many families in the affected states are now mourning the arbitrary arrest and subsequent disappearance of their loved ones due to the alleged excesses of the state-recognised security outfits.

Liverpool Name New Boss To Succeed Klopp – Lifestyle Nigeria

Arne Slot is set to become Liverpool’s next manager after a compensation deal worth up to £9.4m was agreed with Feyenoord.

The Dutchman is poised to succeed Jurgen Klopp, who announced in January he would leave Anfield at the end of the 2023-24 season.

The Reds will now take steps to agree a contract with the 45-year-old before he is officially appointed.

Liverpool have agreed to pay Feyenoord £7.7m (9m euros) plus a possible £1.7m (2m euros) in add-ons.

Slot led Feyenoord to the 2022-23 Eredivisie title, while this season they have won the Dutch Cup and are set to finish second in their league.

It is believed that the attacking style of Slot’s teams, his personality and his ability to develop players are key factors in making him Liverpool’s choice for the job.

Slot took over as Feyenoord manager in 2021 and confirmed his interest in managing in the Premier League when he was linked with Tottenham in 2023.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, who guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title this season, was linked with the position at Anfield.

Many Burnt To Death In Multiple Tanker Explosions

A number of people were killed when tankers carrying petroleum products caught fire along a stretch of the East-West road in Eleme, Rivers state.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the incident caused long delays for travellers, with some victims of the explosions believed to have been trapped in their vehicles as the blasts raged on Friday night. The cause of the explosions remains unclear.

However, eyewitnesses have pointed to “dangerous driving and negligence”.

The Nation quoted Segun Owolabi, an eyewitness, as saying that one tanker collided with a vehicle before bursting into flames, leading to a domino effect.

“I saw four dead bodies burnt. Some may have been in the bushes because many ran away. I saw a whole stretch of vehicles burnt down, trailers burnt down,” Owolabi said.

“There seems to be a truck carrying substances and it was as if it had collided with another vehicle that may have ignited the fire. Over 20 vehicles burnt down and several people trapped.

“There may be more bodies. Oh my God this is a tragedy. A stretch of vehicles burnt.”

Another eyewitness said he heard a loud explosion from a petrochemical complex in the area.
