Presidency’s $600 Million Seaport Investment Unconfirmed by Maersk

Presidency Maersk

Danish shipping and logistics company, A.P Moller-Maersk, has avoided comments on a supposed investment in Nigeria’s seaport infrastructure totalling $600 million.

Last Sunday, President Bola Tinubu and the company’s Chairman, Robert Uggla, held closed-door talks on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Special Meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In a statement by Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, titled ‘President Tinubu meets Chairman of Danish shipping giant Maersk; secures $600 million investment in Nigerian seaport infrastructure,’ he quoted Uggla as saying, “We believe in Nigeria, and we will invest $600m in existing facilities and make the ports accommodating for bigger ships.”

Tinubu had stated that such an investment would complement the administration’s ongoing $1bn investment in seaport reconstruction across Nigeria’s eastern and western seaports.

However, in a statement issued by the company, as reported by Lloyd’s List, a global maritime insight, data, and analytics website; officials of the shipping and logistics giant said, “Maersk has been present in Nigeria for 35 years and, as a global provider of logistics services, we remain committed to develop opportunities for growth to people, the port sector and businesses locally,” the company said in a statement to Lloyd’s List.

“Therefore, it is natural to have an ongoing dialogue with the administration. However, we are not able to comment on any investment talks.”

While reacting to several media reports that Maersk denied such a million-dollar investment in Nigeria, Tinubu’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, late Tuesday, said the company hasn’t denied the FG’s statements.

Multichoice Defies Nigerian Court Order, Hikes DStv and GOtv Subscription (Photo) – Lifestyle Nigeria

In a clear disobedience to the order of a Nigerian court of law, Multichoice Nigeria has brazenly hiked the subscription rates for its DStv and GOtv packages.

This move comes despite an interim order from the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja, which had restrained the company from effecting the price increase pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Recall that . had reported that the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) sitting in Abuja, had on Monday, restrained Multi-Choice Nigeria Limited from increasing its subscription tariffs and cost of products and services scheduled to begin on May 1.

GWG can confirm that the new prices have taken effect, leaving millions of subscribers with no choice but to pay the increased rates. This development has sparked outrage among customers, who feel betrayed by Multichoice’s disregard for the legal system and its customers’ interests.

The CCPT’s ruling had been hailed as a victory for consumers, who had protested the price hike citing economic hardship and the company’s failure to justify the increase. However, the defiance of the court order by Multichoice raises questions about its commitment to ethical business practices and respect for the law.

As the situation unfolds, . will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on any further actions taken by the tribunal or affected customers. For now, DStv and GOtv subscribers are left to bear the brunt of Multichoice’s bold move, which has left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

However, as at the time of compiling this story, Multichoice is yet to release any update or official statement to the court rule.

Nigerian Passport Ranked Low on Global Mobility List

Passports Passport Japa

Nigerians seeking international travel face hurdles as the country’s passport has been ranked among the world’s weakest. VisaGuide’s World Passport Index placed Nigeria at 191st out of 199 nations, only surpassing North Korea, Iraq, and several other countries with restricted travel freedoms.

This ranking raises questions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s recent efforts to improve travel ease, such as the introduction of electronic visa programs.

In contrast, Singapore boasts the world’s strongest passport, according to the index. Rounding out the top five are Italy, Spain, France, and Germany, offering their citizens visa-free access to numerous destinations.

This consistently low ranking highlights the pressing need for Nigeria to address the underlying issues affecting its passport’s global standing.
