Laolu Akande, UN Deputy Secretary-General Meet Ahead 78th UNGA Summit – Lifestyle Nigeria

As the world gears up for the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which is set to feature a congregation of world leaders and presidents, Former Presidential aide Laolu Akande is on ground in New York.

Laolu Akande, who had previously collaborated with the United Nations on several projects and had interviewed global leaders including a sitting US President before he became a presidential aide, is currently in New York to provide extensive coverage of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly session.

The General Debate, a hallmark of the event, serves as a platform where global leaders, Kings, Queens, Presidents, Prime Ministers & Heads of States gather annually to discuss pressing international issues and chart a course for the future.

In a tweet posted earlier today, Akande who has since returned to being a journalist after 8 years of public service expressed his excitement about returning to covering the prestigious event:

In First Christmas Bonus, Tinubu Approves Free Train Ride, 50% Slash In Interstate Fares – Lifestyle Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has approved a 50% slash in price of interstate transport fare for Nigerians traveling during the yuletide from Thursday, December 21, 2023 to January 4, 2024.

This is as the President approved free rides for commuters on all train services within the period.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr Dele Alake revealed this during a press session with State House Correspondents at the Aso Rock Villa on Wednesday.

Alake said, “It is in this wise that the President is announcing through us that beginning from tomorrow, December 21, Nigerians willing to travel can board public transport via mini buses, luxury buses at 50 per cent discount of current cost and all our train services on the route the trains currently serve at zero cost on their travels this holiday season.

“This special presidential intervention will commence tomorrow, Thursday, December 21 and it will end on January 4, 2024.

“The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, will be working with transporters, road transport unions, the Nigerian Railway Corporation to seamlessly deliver on this special presidential initiative.”

Alake added that, “I can tell you that all the relevant stakeholders in that industry have been discussed with or been engaged and all the parameters laid out and the Minister of Transportation has the full details and it’s on top of the game.

“In fact, the Presidents of the various transport unions have been met…and everything is in top shape in terms of execution.”

However, Alake said air iravel was excluded from the initiative because the initiative is targeted at the masses.

“The initiative is for the masses. Air is luxury. The masses don’t use air transport. So they are our main target,” he said.

JUST IN: Tinubu Approves 50% Reduction In Transport Fare Nationwide

 

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu approved a 50% reduction in the cost of interstate transit fares for Nigerians visiting over the holiday season, which runs from Thursday, December 21, 2023 to January 4, 2024.

This is because the President authorized passengers to travel for free on all train lines at that time.

Man bags 75 years imprisonment for fraud

 

Olaniyan Gbenga Amos, popularly known as Crime Alert Security Network, was sentenced to 75 years in jail for serial investment fraud.

On December 14, Justice Bayo Taiwo of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan convicted and sentenced Amos and his company, Detorrid Heritage Investment Limited. They were charged with 35 counts of false pretenses, a violation of Section 1(1)(a) and a punishable offense under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

Counsel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Sanusi Galadanchi opened the case on February 17, 2022, and called six witnesses, tendered eight exhibits and closed the case on January 24, 2023. At the end of the prosecution’s case, the defendant filed a ‘no case submission’ which was overruled by the court. Consequently, the defendant opened and closed his case by calling three witnesses. Thereafter, Justice Taiwo reserved judgment in the matter till December 14, 2023.

At the resumption of trial on December 14, Justice Taiwo convicted and sentenced the defendant to 15 years imprisonment on four counts but discharged and acquitted him on 31 coutns.

The court also ordered that the sentence should run concurrently and the defendant should also restitute the victims.

Amos has three other ongoing trials before Federal and State High Courts in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The convict was arrested and arraigned before Justice Bayo Taiwo on December 14, 2021 by the EFCC. He swindled several individuals of over N1 bullion through fake investment ventures.
