Absence of strong institutions promotes Ethno-religious identities, says Olurode

Professor Lai Olurode of the Department Of Sociology, University Of Lagos, has said that in the absence of strong institutions, ethno-religious identities would continue to display potency.

Olurode, who said this while delivering a lecture titled, ‘Ethics as infrastructure, Governance as superstructure: Lagos State of Our (their) dream, added that it would take a considerable length of period before ethno-religious identities resources could be demobilised.

He implored leaders to minimise political paraphernalia and focus more on governance as well as stop naming projects after themself; but let history judge their works.

“For reasons of its exceptional status, Lagos will continue to be home to migrants from far and near, so measures should be in place to re-orientate them toward Lagos core values. We must not leave this to chances. A pamphlet to this effect can be produced.

“Training centres for continuous education of those in the civil service should be expanded and well funded to continuously fulfill their core mandates and sensitise policy makers to understanding sociology of Lagos Society and its people

“Lagos should continue to support less endowed states in order to abate migration in large numbers to Lagos state. This policy will be one in self-enlightenment.”
