Manchester United never wanted Ronaldo to leave — Calderon

Latest entertainment gist

Former Real Madrid President Ramon Calderon has opened up on how 5-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo was able to leave Manchester United in 2009.

In a recent interview, Calderon opened up on the hurdles encountered during Cristiano Ronaldo’s monumental transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009.

Calderon disclosed that while Ronaldo was keen on joining the Spanish giants, convincing Manchester United, then managed by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, proved to be a formidable task.

Calderon’s insights offer a glimpse into the negotiations that led to Ronaldo’s then-world record-breaking €94 million move to Real Madrid. At the time, Ronaldo, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, was among the most esteemed talents in the English Premier League.

“It wasn’t very difficult, he wanted Real Madrid. It was more difficult to convince Manchester,” Calderon stated in a recent interview with Madrid Xtra. “Logically, they didn’t want him to leave. Thanks to the player’s will and the commitment made by both sides in December 2008, the deal was completed at the end of the season.”

Despite Ronaldo’s desire for a new challenge in Spain, Manchester United’s reluctance to part ways with their prized asset prolonged negotiations. However, through persistent efforts and mutual commitment, a deal was eventually reached, culminating in Ronaldo’s historic move to Real Madrid.

“There is no IF with Real Madrid” — Thierry Henry

Latest entertainment gist

They are inevitable — Thierry Henry

There are some things that cannot be explained or argued with in life — death, tax and Real Madrid continually dominating the Champions League come what may as soon as they get themselves into the spot of a semi-final.

According to their recent history, the Los Blancos have not lost the UEFA Champions League whenever they have found themselves within the space of the semi-final or final in the least. In fact, the last time the Spanish giants ever lost a final of Europe’s grand tournament was in the 80s to Liverpool.

To put plainly, the Champions League is a birthright for Real Madrid. However, this is still debated on by clubs, specifically by fans of the Los Blancos’ opponents who continually put up ‘Ifs’ to discredit the La Liga club’s prowess in the competition.

What if Chelsea had held on longer in the 2021/22 campaign? Or what if Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City finished up their chances? What if Liverpool had been more clinical in the 2021/22 final or had Trent Alexander-Arnold not left Federico Valverde unmarked to pull off the cross that was finished by Vinicius Jr.?

For former Arsenal player, these are the Ifs he does not want to hear especially when it comes to Real Madrid.

“When people talk about Real Madrid, they use a lot of ‘IF’. How Leipzig didn’t score more, how they had little off the ball vs City,” Henry remarked.

“It doesn’t matter. You think you have them, you don’t. That’s why they have 14 Champions League.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid recently battled Bayern Munich to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash at the Allianz Arena. While Bayern Munich showcased dominance throughout the match and created better scoring opportunities, they failed to convert them into goals.
