BREAKING: Court Strikes Out Discreet DSS Suit To Keep Emefiele In Detention

the request was discreetly filed by the DSS’s legal team on Wednesday based on an alleged new evidence it had obtained.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja has refused an application by the Department of State Services seeking an order to extend the dentention of suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

It was gathered that the request was discreetly filed by the DSS’s legal team on Wednesday based on an alleged new evidence it had obtained.

According to Channels Television, the application was dismissed by Justice Hamza Muazu who cited an abuse of court process and the lack of jurisdiction.

The request by the DSS followed Emefiele’s re-arrest by the agency from the court premises in Lagos, after the court had ordered his remand in a Correctional Centre while awaiting the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

The DSS’s counsel, Victor Ejelonu, chose to withdraw the matter after the judge raised questions about the court’s jurisdiction, given the exclusive rights of the Magistrate Court to grant detention orders under sections 293 and 296 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

Customs Increases FX Rate For Import Duties

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made an adjustment to the foreign exchange (FX) rate used for import duties.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the new rate is now N1,373.64 per dollar, representing a 19.4 percent increase from the previous rate of N1,150.1/$ which was displayed on April 24.

The newly adopted rate by the customs was observed on Wednesday. Despite the increase, the rate set by NCS is still lower than the official foreign exchange rate, which closed at N1,390/$ on April 30.

Customs typically adopts FX rates recommended by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for import duties based on trading activities in the official forex market.

On February 23, the CBN directed customs and other related parties to adopt the closing rate in the official window for import duty.

The apex bank instructed that the FX rate at the point of importation should be used for import duty assessment until the termination date and clearance are finalized.

Since the floating of the naira on June 14, 2023, the currency has been unstable in the FX market.

UK Starts Detaining Asylum Seekers That Will Be Deported

British authorities have recently launched a new scheme to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, and have started detaining such individuals in this regard.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the first deportation flights are expected to depart as early as July.

“Our dedicated enforcement teams are working at pace to swiftly detain those who have no right to be here so we can get flights off the ground,” Home Secretary, James Cleverly said on Wednesday.

The confirmation of the round-ups comes in the wake of a recent law passed by the legislators, which declares Rwanda to be a “safe third country”.

This bypasses an earlier ruling by the UK Supreme Court, which had declared the scheme unlawful on human rights grounds.

The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has promised to curb the arrival of migrants and asylum seekers, particularly those arriving on small boats from mainland Europe.

To this end, the UK government plans to detain people promptly before deportation flights start within “10 to 12 weeks”.

The government expects to deport 5,700 people this year, after it was confirmed that Rwanda had agreed “in principle” to accept that number.
