COVID-19: Tokyo Se To Skip One-year Olympic Countdown

Indications have shown that Tokyo is likely to scrap events marking a year to go until the postponed 2020 Olympic Games os held.

This was done as they deem a celebration inappropriate during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics was postponed till July 23, 2021, over the pandemic. However, it remains unclear whether the delay will be sufficient.

It could be recalled that the host city and organisers had last year held a series of events to mark the one-year countdown, including unveiling the newly designed medals.

But due to the global crisis, a similar celebration is unlikely this July. Kyodo news agency cited a source within the organising committee, saying posters and messages of encouragement to athletes might be put up and displayed online instead.

Also, a national broadcaster NHK, cited committee sources, saying there were concerns about holding large-scale events while the risk of infection remains.

Tokyo 2020 organisers are yet to comment on the development.

Meanwhile, after a nationwide state of emergency over the virus was lifted, Japan had experienced a recent rise in cases in Tokyo, leading to fears of a second wave.

Tokyo’s governor confirmed the city and organisers are looking at ways to scale back next year’s Games. One of the ways is streamlining plans which could involve cutting the number of spectators and reducing participation in the opening and closing ceremonies.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun daily, everyone including athletes, officials and spectators would be required to take a test for the virus, but Tokyo 2020 had declined to comment on those reports, saying discussions about coronavirus countermeasures would be held “from this autumn onwards”.
