A number of public figures have written an open letter to President Buhari demanding justice for those attacked by police and for those who were jailed for taking part in protests against police brutality in October.

Co-founder of Black Lives Matter, Opal Tometi, was joined by singer Alicia Keys, actress Kerry Washington, climate activist Greta Thunberg and 62 others in signing an open letter calling for the ban on peaceful demonstrations to be lifted to allow Nigerians exercise their constitutional right to protest.

The letter asked President Buhari to release jailed protesters and journalists and to return confiscated passports and government IDs and to unfreeze bank accounts. The letter which was published in the New York Times outline actions that the activists demand immediately, including the release of jailed protesters, activists and journalists, holding all officers found responsible for the killing at Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.

It asked that the president permit a transparent investigation by independent human rights monitors into the actions that led to the killings at Lekki Toll Gate; and lift the ban on peaceful demonstrations throughout Nigeria.
