Derek Chauvin pleads guilty to violating George Floyd\’s federal civil rights

\"

Derek Chauvin has pleaded guilty to federal charges that he violated George Floyd\’s civil rights after he was convicted this year by a state jury of murder and manslaughter in Floyd\’s death.

Chauvin, 45, entered the new plea during a hearing in St. Paul, Minnesota, three months after first pleading not guilty to depriving Floyd, who was Black, of his rights when Chauvin knelt on his neck for 9 1/2 minutes while detaining him in May 2020.

Federal prosecutors told U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson that Chauvin agreed to plead guilty to using excessive force on Floyd. Chauvin also admitted guilt in a separate federal indictment in connection with him allegedly depriving a 14-year-old boy of his civil rights during an encounter in September 2017.

Jamb UTME printed result slips

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has issued a cautionary statement to the public regarding the presentation of printed result slips for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Contrary to circulated claims on social media, the Board clarified that the results are not available in paper format at the moment. Unlike last year, the results are currently inaccessible on the Board’s website.

Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the spokesperson for the examination body, conveyed this information in a statement released on Wednesday.

The statement read, “The Board, once again, wishes to state clearly that the only way to check the 2024 UTME result is to Send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone used by the candidate in registering for the UTME exercise. Ensure that the SIM is not on any bundle.

“This is different from what was obtained last year; hence, the results are not and cannot be found on the Board’s website at the moment.

“Candidates are urged to follow the method specified above to obtain their results. They need not visit any cybercafe or patronise any third-party entity to check their result.

“The public is also advised to be wary of any candidate parading printed result slip as currently; the result is not on any paper format as being circulated on social media by some individuals.

“A reasonable number of candidates have checked their results as seen on our monitoring dashboard, but for the few still struggling, please follow the right channel.”

Govt, Workers Join Forces to Increase Minimum Wage, Says Oshiomhole

Oshiomhole

The Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, says there is a mutual agreement between workers and the Federal Government and the state counterparts that there is an urgent need to increase the minimum wage.

Oshiomhole, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, said that all concerned parties acknowledged that the current minimum wage of N30,000 is outdated and should be increased to meet with rising cost of living.

“I think there is some unanimity between employers, including private employers and obviously the Federal Government and I believe state governments that the current minimum wage of 30,000 is a joke,” Oshiomhole said.

“There is a recognition of the fact that the purchasing power of the workers across the board including directors, permanent secretaries not to talk of those on levels one to four, has dropped radically and you need to beef it up.

“In a market economy, there are even countries where wages are indexed to the weight of inflation. So, I think there is a shared commitment that wages should go up and go up radically as much as prices have skyrocketed.

“Following several months of discussions between the government and the workers, there was a huge expectation that a new minimum wage would be announced during the Workers Day commemoration today but that was not to be.

“However, the government assured the workers that they will not lose anything as the new minimum wage whenever it is agreed will take effect from May 1, 2024.”
