Verification

Checks by Daily Trust have shown that nigeria has a projected number of 93.5 million voters as at October 2022 according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who made the disclosure at the third quarterly meeting with political parties, said the figure, was 20 million higher than the combined voter population of the 14 other West African countries in the sub-region.

Further checks by Daily Trust also showed that INEC registered about 10 million new eligible voters out of which 40 percent students are students.

In terms of demographic distribution, 7.2 million new voters or 76.5% are young people between 18-34 years, while there is a slightly higher number of female (4.8 million or 50.82%) than male (4.6 million or 49.18%) voters.

“In terms of occupation, 3.8 million (40.8%) are students.” INEC further disclosed on the new registrations.

Checks on INEC websites also show that the North-West geopolitical zone, which comprises the seven states of Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi and Jigawa, with a total of 22.67 million registered voters, has the highest number of registered voters.

This is closely followed by the South-West, which now has 18.3 million, having added 2, 039, 982 new registered voters. The zone comprises Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti and Ondo.

In third position is the South-South which comprises Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Edo and Delta states. The number of registered voters in the zone has risen from 12.8 million to 15.2 million.

North-Central which is made up of Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Kwara and Plateau, now has 14.1 million voters while the North-East which is made up of Yobe, Borno, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe, added 1.5 million new voters to reach 12.8 million registered voters.

The South-East, which is the smallest geopolitical zone, and consists of five states Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Anambra and Imo, now has 11.49 million voters while the number of registered voters in the Federal Capital Territory has increased from 1.3 million to 1.5 million.

Daily Trust observed that there is no where on the INEC website that specifies the numeric strength or the number of registered of different ethnic or religious Associations in nigeria.

There is no official data from either the National Population Commission or the National Bureau of Statistics showing that Miyetti Allah has up to 16 million members spread across the country.

Verdict: Unverified

Conclusion

Although Miyetti Allah as an association has eligible voters, there is no official record from INEC to show that the association has 16 million voters, as such, the claim by Usman-Ngelzarma cannot be verified.

Atiku Visits Ningi, Says NASS Shouldn’t Be Tool In The Hands Of Oppressive Govt

Latest Politics updatein nigeria

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said for the country to move forward public institutions, especially the National Assembly should not become a tool “in the hands of oppressive governments.”

Atiku gave the charge during a solidarity visit to the Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, Senator Abdul Ningi, at his residence.

Ningi was recently suspended by the Senator Godswill Akpabio-led Senate for alleging that the Federal government was operating a budget different from the one approved by the National Assembly.

Speaking at Ningi residence, the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election said the interest of Nigerians would be better served and envisaged development assured if premium is placed on strengthening the integrity of the institutions of government.

Atiku noted that, “the integrity of public institutions, especially such as the National Assembly, is a mirror to how the interests of the masses are preserved and protected in a democracy.”

He said further that the struggle that Senator Ningi finds himself in is a continuation of the long-drawn agitation (which Ningi had been a part of) to make sure that public institutions in nigeria don’t apply brute force to oppress and compromise the interests of the masses.

“This agitation did not start just recently. It started during the military era, and it is essential that public institutions, especially the National Assembly, do not become a tool in the hands of oppressive governments.”

“By our visitation today, we have come to show solidarity with Senator Abdul Ningi and to also pass a message to those who see public office as an instrument to oppress the people, that Senator Ningi is not alone in this struggle.

“In fact, the entire people of nigeria and friends of nigeria in the international community are behind our drive to cleanse the country of oppressive nuances of people in positions of authority,” Atiku said.

Responding, Senator Ningi thanked Atiku and his delegation for the visit and for choosing to take a stand on the side of the masses.

“The struggle that we are in for today is to make sure that whichever political party is in power and whoever is in the position of public office, the interests of the masses must remain sacrosanct and insulated from the whims of any one individual, no matter how highly placed,” he said.

Peter Obi Questions 30-Year Completion Target for Lagos-Calabar Highway

Latest Politics updatein nigeria

Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has tackled the Federal Government over the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.

Obi expressed his concern in a statement via his verified X handle on Monday.

According to him, there is a pressing issue of numerous uncompleted roads scattered across the country, many of which, according to him, have become hazardous death traps and security risks.

He maintained that embarking on another huge project that will not be completed in the next 20 or 30 years will only worsen the problem of abandoned, uncompleted projects that are not contributing to economic growth and overall development.

Obi suggested that given the state of the nation’s economy, prioritization and fiscal discipline should be the critical guiding principles, insisting that the project will worsen the already sagging debt burden.

The former Anambra State governor said most of those uncompleted roads have been under construction for several years and are unlikely to be completed any time soon due to poor and unplanned funding.

He said, “I have closely followed the comments and developments arising from the coastal (Lagos-Calabar) Super highway Project.

“While I’m hesitant to engage in contentious debates about its benefits, which I acknowledge, and the pricing, which I have serious concerns about, and believe should be thoroughly reviewed, I am compelled to raise essential questions about the timing and prioritization of such a monumental venture.”
