Umana said, “The Court Order was signed by Hon Justice Effiong Effiong who ordered that access to the bank premises and its facilities be restricted.”

The order noted that, “The banks have not been remitting actual tax deductible from its employees’ salaries and other relevant taxes due to the State; hence failed to comply with provisions of relevant tax laws.”

Binance Founder Sentenced To 4 Months In Prison

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has been sentenced to four months in prison for breaking US anti-money laundering laws.

A judge credited Zhao for taking responsibility for his wrongdoing but said he was troubled by the now-former CEO’s decision to ignore U.S. banking requirements that would have slowed the company’s explosive growth.

The sentence was far less than the three years prosecutors had sought, but defense attorneys had asked that Zhao spend no time in prison.

“Despite wealth, power or status, no person — regardless of wealth — is immune from prosecution or above the laws of the United States,” U.S. District Judge Richard A. Jones told Zhao.

Zhao pleaded guilty in November to one count of failing to maintain an anti-money-laundering program and stepped down as Binance agreed to pay $4.3 billion to settle related allegations. U.S. officials said Zhao deliberately looked the other way as people conducted transactions that supported child sex abuse, the illegal drug trade and terrorism.

“I failed here,” Zhao told the court Tuesday. “I deeply regret my failure, and I am sorry.”

No one has ever been sentenced to prison time for similar violations of the Bank Secrecy Act, defense attorneys Mark Bartlett and William Burck told the judge. But prosecutors argued that if Zhao did not receive time in custody for the offense, no one would, rendering the law toothless.

Uzodinma Appoints Self As Commissioner For Land

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has taken on the role of the Commissioner for Land, Survey and Physical Planning in the state.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the Governor had earlier appointed Enyinnaya Onuegbu as Commissioner for Lands, but he was later replaced by Noble Atulegwu, former Commissioner for Skills and Entrepreneurial Affairs.

However, Atulegwu was suspended as commissioner in November 2023.

According to Oguike Nwachukwu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Uzodinma’s self-appointment was aimed at ridding the ministry of “criminal-minded fellows” who have portrayed the government in a negative light.

The Governor believes that his appointment will enable proper monitoring and management of the ministry.

“The office of the governor will play supervisory role over the land ministry for now for the purpose of ridding the place of certain developments by some criminal-minded fellows which have portrayed the government in a bad light,” the cable quoted him as saying.

“I am certain most Imo people would love the governor to hold that position for as long as he remains in office because they trust his ability to protect their common patrimony.”
