‘Hero’ Obi Stopped North From Retaining Power — Wike

Rivers state Governor, South South Nigeria, Nyesom Wike has described the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as the hero of the just-concluded election.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that Wike spoke during an interactive meeting with Technical Dealers Association of Nigeria (TDAN), Computer Dealers Association (TDA), Garrison Phone Dealers Association (GPDA) and Building Materials Traders Association (BMTA) in Port Harcourt.

He said his active participation stopped the North from retaining power after President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Governor explained that contrary to insinuation that he did not support Peter Obi, most people failed to realise that LP candidate was his hero of the election.

He said: “Obi is my hero. If Obi did not contest, power would have gone back to the North. The whole of South south and Southeast that PDP lost, if Obi did not contest PDP would have won.

“The hero of this election is Obi whether you like it or not. I am not here to please you, Obi is the hero. He may not have been pronounced as the winner, no problem, the law will take its course.

“If Obi did not run this election, power would have remained in the North. Whether he is declared a winner now or not, history will be on his side that he fought and fought well.”

How I collected $600,000 bribe for Emefiele, ex-CBN director tells court

On Monday, an Ikeja Special Offences Court heard from John Ayoh, a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Director in Charge of Information and Technology, about how he collected $600,000 from two contractors on behalf of the bank’s CEO, Godwin Emefiele.

Olalekan Ojo (SAN), the counsel for Emefiele (1st defendant), cross-examined Ayoh in front of Justice Rahman Oshodi.

The former CBN governor previously contested the court’s jurisdiction to trial him for abuse of office and the alleged multibillion-dollar fraud against him.

In his move on notice filed April 24, Ojo contended that the court lacked the constitutional jurisprudence to examine the charges against Emefiele.

He said: “There is need to consider jurisdictional objection before allowing this case. “This defendant ought not to be arraigned before this court on constitutional grounds. We are saying that charges against the first defendant are unconstitutional.

“I urge your lordship to toe the path of legality and constitutionality to determine this application.”

King Charles III to resume public duties while battling cancer

King Charles III will resume some public duties this week following a three-month break to focus on his treatment and recuperation after he was diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer, Buckingham Palace said.

The 75-year-old monarch, who is still battling cancer, will mark the milestone by visiting a cancer treatment center on Tuesday, April 30, the first of several public appearances he will make in the coming weeks, the palace said.

One of his first major engagements will be to host a state visit by the emperor and empress of Japan in June.

The palace said the king’s doctors are “very encouraged” by his progress, though it is too early to say how long his treatment will last. It didn’t provide details about what type of treatment he is receiving.

Charles will continue to perform all of his state duties, including reviewing government documents and meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as he has done since his diagnosis was disclosed on Feb. 5, the palace said.

“As the first anniversary of the coronation approaches, their majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year,’’ the palace said in a statement.

The palace was forced to make the statement after several sources claimed the king was “very unwell” and his funeral plans were being “updated”
