I’m ready to nominate people for appointments in Tinubu’s govt – PDP chieftain, Bode George

A former deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George, has dismissed claims that he is looking for appointment under President Bola Tinubu, saying he is too old for such.

He noted however that if he was approached or offered such, he would only assist in nominating competent candidates from his party.

George, who had been an ardent critic of Tinubu, in a telephone interview with Punch on Thursday, said he had ended his rift with the President, not for appointment, but for peace to reign, and in deference to those who intervened in the matter, at the behest of Tinubu.

He stressed that after some senior indigenes of Lagos State and a delegation from the All Progressives Congress visited him to end the longstanding dispute and solicited his support for the Tinubu government, noting that he could never have desired anything more at his age.

He stated, “On this, people are only talking rubbish and they need to shut up. This man (Tinubu) is just starting and we said my party was still in court. They said we should let bygones be bygones. In the Bible, it is very clear that vengeance is only with God Almighty and you don’t continue fighting when everybody has persuaded you that it’s enough.

“All those saying I want an appointment don’t know what they are saying. What exactly do they want to happen to the young ones coming up? I said I have forgiven him. We had an issue and people settled it for us and I have forgotten about it.”

Asked whether or not he would accept an appointment from the government if offered, he stated, “I will give him people that have the knowledge from the party having been a manager of the party for years. If he says he wants me to help him get someone, there are millions of young people who still have all the energy to run around and not me.

Ondo Govt Speaks On Allocating N5bn To Daycare Centre

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that Following the outcry that greeted the allocation of N5 billion for the renovation of a daycare in the 2024 budget of Ondo State, the state government has described the development as an error.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Emmanuel Igbasan, who blamed the printer of the document for the error, stated that it was a mix-up.

Earlier, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had accused the state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, of purportedly using that as an avenue to mop up funds ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

Igbasan, in a statement, said: “The five billion naira provision was actually meant to reflect the expected drawdown from the Nigerian for Women Project (World Bank supported) which had earlier been captured under the capital receipts of the document.

“The N18 million reported on the Nigerian for Women Project is meant for the renovation of a daycare project. This is a regrettable printer’s interpolation error that occurred during the process of preparing the document for publication.

“At the operational level, this error will not materialise and is almost impossible to detect. The Ministry takes full responsibility for this error and we have immediately set in motion the machinery to have the error corrected.”

How We Will Fund N70k Edo Minimum Wage – Obaseki – Lifestyle Nigeria

The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has said the N70,000 new minimum wage for workers in the State is within what his administration can afford, noting that the increase became necessary as a result of the current economic realities.

The governor said this while addressing workers during a rally held to mark the May Day celebration at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

He praised the workers for the harmonious relationship with his administration, noting that the peaceful disposition of the organised labour in the State with the government has led to several achievements for the State Government.

Obaseki noted, “Two days ago, I announced that we have raised the minimum wage for Edo workers from N40,000 to N70,000 naira, an increase of over 75 per cent. This is because we know and feel the pains and hardship which most of you experience daily.

“Fuel subsidy has been removed. The exchange rate has more than doubled and food prices have gone almost off the roof and most of you find it difficult to feed yourself and your family.

“We are an empathetic government; we can’t say we do not know and if we know, we can’t sit down without doing anything about it. This is why we say even if it’s a strain on us, we should do what we ought to do to increase the minimum wage for our workers.”

He continued: “The N70,000 minimum wage is within what we can afford as a State Government. However, should the Federal government decide on a higher minimum wage and make the funds available to States from the savings which have been made from fuel subsidy, the Edo State Government will adjust its minimum wage to that of the Federal government.

“Your salaries will continue to be paid on or before the 26th day of every month. We would continue to ensure we have an effective health insurance scheme to assist public servants. This scheme has assisted many families. I encourage you to enroll into this scheme.
