JUST IN: FCCPC Seals Sahad Store In Abuja For Alleged Price Fixing

Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken action by sealing off Sahad Store, a popular supermarket in Abuja’s Garki area.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that this development follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent announcement of plans to address factors contributing to the food crisis.

The enforcement was led by FCCPC Acting Executive Vice Chairman, Adamu Ahmed Abdullahi.

The management of Sahad Store was accused of misleading pricing practices, charging customers prices that differed from those displayed on the shelves.

Abdullahi, briefing journalists, stated that the commission’s preliminary investigation found evidence of the supermarket’s management shortchanging customers. He added that the store would remain sealed until further investigations are completed.

“What we have found out that these people are doing is misleading pricing and lack of transparency in the pricing, which is against Section 115 (3) of the law that says a consumer is not required to pay a price for any good or service higher than the one that’s on display.”

“Section 155 states that any corporate person that contravenes is liable to a fine of 100 million naira or even more and the directors of the company themselves are liable upon conviction payment of 10 million naira each or imprisonment of six months or both.

“What we have done today is to make sure that they comply with the law. We initially called them to come and defend themselves, but failed to show up. In the long run, they sent a lawyer whom we asked if he was familiar with the facts of the case. He said he wasn’t.

BREAKING: IPMAN Set To Shut Down 30,000 Filling Station

Lifestyle Nigeria gathered that the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria announced on Tuesday that the 30,000 stations run by IPMAN members nationwide will be closed if the Federal Government does not settle the N200bn debt owed to marketers.

According to IPMAN, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority—a Federal Government agency—has declined to pay the outstanding debt, which has been accumulating since September 2022.

The non-payment of marketers’ bridging claims was revealed in a communiqué released in Abuja by Yahaya Alhassan, the Chairman of the IPMAN Depot Chairmen Forum. In Nigeria, IPMAN is in charge of more than 30,000 filling stations.

Payments made by the government to oil marketers for the conveyance of petroleum products loaded from depots to different states throughout the nation are known as bridging claims.

Alhassan said the consequences of the failure by NMDPRA to pay the N200bn “will be terrible, as every marketer’s outlet across Nigeria, from the North to the South, and from the East to the West, will be shut down.”
