‘Sister, I was raised in the village, I don’t understand phonetic’ – Umahi tells journalist

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, sparked reactions online over his exchange with Arise TV correspondent, Laila Johnson, during a media session on Wednesday, May 1, on the construction of the Calabar-Lagos coastal highway.

Laila was asking Umahi a question concerning approval for the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project when the Minister interjected by saying, “Sister, I was raised in the village, me I no dey hear ‘phoné’”, which simply means phonetics.

In response, Laila told the Minister that it was how she speaks, and Umahi asked for interpreters.

Laila further pushed back by saying that Umahi had enough people around him to make him understand what she was saying.

Shortly after the exchange, Umahi responded to Laila’s question by saying they had received all the necessary approvals to initiate the project.

Number Of Dependants Down By 80% After Visa Crackdown – UK

United Kingdom has claimed success in reducing the number of dependants in the country by 80%.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the announcement was made by Rishi Sunak, UK Prime Minister on social media on Wednesday. He stated that this significant fall in dependents is evidence that the changes made to the country’s visa system are working.

“The number of students bringing family members and dependants to the UK was too high. This wasn’t fair.

“Our changes are working—student dependant numbers are now down by 80 per cent,” he wrote.

Earlier this year, the UK government had called for a reduction in the number of dependents, such as spouses and children, of overseas students coming to the country.

According to an update issued by the Home Office, during the period of January to March this year, dependents have drastically fallen by almost 80%, amid over 26,000 fewer student visa applications made.

Under the new rules, most international students, except those on research courses, cannot bring their family members along and also cannot switch their visas before completing their course.

The government claims that this measure has prevented misuse of the student visa as a “backdoor” to work in the UK. The Home Office has been cracking down on institutions “selling immigration not education”.

Traditional Ruler Lagos-Calabar – .

In a viral Update, the traditional ruler also known as the Baale of Okun-Ajah has been captured, challenging the Minister of Works, David Umahi, over the controversial Lagos-Calabar coastal lane,  during a press conference.

During the press conference, he told the minister that the coastal lane they are about to construct is in the ocean and not in their land.

The traditional ruler disclosed that they have been calling on the federal government to come and claim the ocean for years, but instead, they are now claiming his community

He also said;

“As of 2006 when we moved in there the routes for the coastal road were already demarcated. Now the federal government is having a new realignment which encroaches on the whole village entirely. The whole community is finished by the new alignment.”
