Speaking with reporters after a meeting with the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, on Tuesday in Washington, Onyeama said he sought more information on President Donald Trump’s latest immigration crackdown announced last week which targeted Nigeria and five other countries.

2. Buhari Reacts To CAN, Adeboye Prayer-Walk Protest Against Insecurity

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the protest by leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), saying that every Nigerian has the right to a peaceful protest. Leaders of CAN had declared Friday, 31 January, to Sunday, 2 February, 2020, as days for special fasting and prayer for Nigeria in all churches, home and abroad. However, Buhari, in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said CAN leaders have every right to protest if they are not happy with the rate of insecurity in the country.

3. Coronavirus: Reps Divided Over Evacuation Of Nigerians From China

Members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected a motion calling for the evacuation of Nigerians in Wuhan, China, over fear of contracting coronavirus. A stunned Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila fought to ensure the motion was moved by Kali but members moved against it as the Chamber became rowdy.

4. Visa On Arrival: Buhari Presents Nigeria’s New Visa Policy For 2020

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday presented the Nigeria Visa Policy (NVP) for the year 2020, Concise News reports. The revised policy, one of which is the visa on arrival, is sequel to Buhari’s pronouncements in November, 2020, that a new policy of visas on arrival would be granted to all African travellers from January 2020. The Nigerian leader, who presented the document at the State House, Abuja, said that the review of the visa policy was intended to attract innovation and specialised skills.

5. Abacha Loot: Nigeria Signs Tripartite Agreement To Repatriate $318m

The Nigerian government has signed an agreement with the United States and the Island of Jersey to repatriate $318,460,329 stolen and stashed away by former Head of State Gen. Sani Abacha. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye, said the agreement was signed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, on Monday at the United States Department of States, Washington DC.

6. Insecurity: ACF Tackles Abaribe Over Call On Buhari To Resign

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has frowned at the call by Senate Minority Leader, Eyinnaya Abaribe, that President Muhammadu Buhari should resign over the spate of insecurity in the country. Reacting to his call, the Secretary-General of ACF, Anthony Sani said Buhari can’t resign because his administration had been able to combat Boko Haram and reduce the activities of insurgents to the “fringes of the Northeast.”

7. Minimum Wage: Organised Labour Begins Strike Tuesday

Organised labour in Niger state, north-central Nigeria, has directed workers to embark on an indefinite strike from Tuesday, February 4, over non-implementation of the new national minimum wage and other entitlements. Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Yakubu Garba, and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) equivalent, Yunusa Tanimu, made this known in a statement, Monday.

8. Customs Officials Intercept $8m At Murtala Muhammed Airport

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said that its operatives have seized $8m at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State. Concise News reports. Addressing a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, the Comptroller-General of the service, Hammed Ali, disclosed that the cash stashed inside a car was intercepted before getting loaded into an aircraft.

9. Saudi Arabian Ambassador To Nigeria Dies In Abuja Hospital

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, Adnan Mahmoud Bostaji, has been confirmed dead. According to a statement issued by the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Nigeria on Tuesday, the envoy died in his sleep. The statement added that Bostaji was pronounced dead at a Turkish hospital in Abuja.

10. Buhari Gives Appointment To Super Eagles Legend

Former Nigeria international Daniel Amokachi has been appointed as the country’s Football Ambassador by President Muhammadu Buhari. Amokachi, a member of the 1994 Super Eagles team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, was part of Clemens Westerhof’s team that earned Nigeria’s first World Cup (USA 1994) qualification in 1993.

Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will on October 26 begin a full hearing of the petition filed by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the declaration of Senator Ademola Adeleke as governor-elect.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that the tribunal made this pronouncement after concluding the pre-hearing session on Thursday.

The tribunal was asked to dismiss the applications of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), seeking the discontinuation of the petition brought to it by Governor Oyetola.

Counsel for Oyetola and the APC, Lasun Sanusi, SAN, at the sitting of the tribunal argued that Adeleke’s, PDP’s and INEC’s reliance on a Federal Court High judgment was nothing but an abuse of court process.

Sanusi argued this while replying to separate applications of the trio, seeking the dismissal of the petition based on the already appealed Federal High Court judgment disqualifying Oyetola from contesting the election.

Citing Supreme Court decisions in the case of Jegede Vs INEC, 2021, 14NWLR, Pt 1797, page 409, the counsel said the court had ruled that the signatories to the letter conveying the nomination of a candidate were not the nominators; rather, the nomination was done by party members at the congress, hence, the judgment could not stand.

Meanwhile, the counsel for INEC, Prof. Paul Ananaba, SAN; counsel for Adeleke, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN and counsel for the PDP, Dr. Alex Izinyon, SAN, agreed that any decision the tribunal would take on the matter would have to wait until the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court decided on it.

They noted that they just decided to argue the applications to have it on record, a position which the tribunal agreed with and put on record.

Also, in other applications totalling nine by the three respondents, they asked the tribunal to strike out some paragraphs of the petition on the grounds that they were either lumped together or not related to the 2022 election.

In response to each of the applications, Sanusi said all the cases cited by the respondents were misconceived, adding that they were not applicable in the instance case.

He cited the case of INEC Vs Otti, 2016, 8NWLR, where the Supreme Court hinted that INEC was supposed to be neutral, arguing that all the processes filed before the panel have not portrayed the commission’s neutrality.

Sanusi further argued that the applications filed by the respondents were only meant to prevent the tribunal from focusing on hearing the petition on merit, asking the panel to dismiss the applications.

Subsequently, counsel for all parties in the matter agreed to begin the full hearing starting with the calling of witnesses on October 26.

In his ruling, the tribunal declared the pre-hearing session concluded and announced that the pre-hearing conference report would be presented on October 17.

The remains of Flight Lieutenant Chapele Ebiakpo, one of the pilots of the NAF Alpha-Jet aircraft that crashed in Maiduguri, Borno state on March 31, 2021, have been laid to rest.

 

It will be recalled that the Nigerian Air Force fighter jet was declared missing on 31 March 2021 after losing radar contact. The crash site was later discovered and the bodies of the two pilots onboard the ill-fated jet were recovered. The pilots were on the battlefield fight Boko Haram members when the jet crashed.

 

On Thursday, October 13, friends and family members of the Late Ebiakpo gathered together at the National Military cemetery to bid him farewell. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.
