President Buhari who is currently on a medical trip to London granted an audience to APC leaders, Mai Mala Buni, and others.

 

Buni was in London to see the President over the leadership crisis rocking the party. Recall that a few days ago, some governors in the party had made an attempt to remove him as the chairman of the caretaker committee. This decision met stiff opposition from INEC which indicated that it only recognizes Buni as the chairman of the party\’s caretaker committee.

 

Buni was in London to get the President\’s approval to conduct the March 26 convention of the party.

GTBank records largest ever 1st quarter profit in Nigerian banking history

Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), one of Nigeria’s most efficiently run bank, has just announced the largest ever pre-tax profits in Nigerian banking history.

According to information contained in its first-quarter earnings, the bank posted a pre-tax profit of N509.3 billion, more than six times the profits it made in the same period in 2023.

Profit after tax for the period under review printed N457.1 billion while the bank’s total assets rose to N13 trillion from N9.6 trillion at the end of 2023.

GTCO entire profit after tax for 2023 was N539.6 billion underscoring how significant this result is for the bank and its shareholders.

The Holding Company, which includes its flagship Nigerian bank and its fledgling subsidiaries, reported a net interest income of N213.8 billion after deducting loan losses.

Net interest income was three times its prior year figure, highlighting the substantial profits banks are generating from loans and advances to their customers.

In a season of high interest rates and exchange rate weakness, commercial banks tend to deliver impressive numbers.

Former Education Minister Kenneth Gbagi Is Dead

Kenneth Gbagi, a prominent industrialist and former Minister of Education, is dead.

Lifestyle Nigeria reports that Gbagi, who was the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the last election held in Delta State, Gbagi died on Saturday, May 4, 2024. He aged 62.

The statement, signed by his eldest son, Chief Emuoboh Gbagi, read, “It is with profound sadness but gratitude to God that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, husband, and brother.

“Olorogun Kenneth Omemavwa Gbagi, former Minister of Education, departed this life on the 4th of May 2024 at the age of 62.

“We take comfort in the fond memories of his life, his achievements, and the impact he made on the lives of countless individuals and communities.

“We kindly request your thoughts and prayers for our family during this challenging time of loss.

“May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi was born on September 22, 1961, in Sapele, Delta State. He attended Bishop Johnson Memory Primary School in Sapele and later proceeded to Kosofe Secondary School, Mile 12 in Lagos for his secondary education.

Plateau Athletes Shine At Enugu Half Marathon – Lifestyle Nigeria

Francis James of Plateau emerged winner of the maiden edition of Zenith Bank Coal City Half Marathon on Saturday in Enugu.

James returned in a time of 1:12mins: 2 secs. to win the N1 million  prize money.

Ismael Sajo of Cross River came second in a time of 1: 13 mins: 51secs and Nenfort Mathias of Plateau came third in a time of 1: 43 mins:5secs.

Also Patience Dalyop of Plateau clocked 1: 25mins: 51secs  to win the female category, while Agbofure Charity of Delta came second in a time of 1: 26mins: Munifikat Emmanuel of Plateau came  third.

The second and third place winners received the sum of N500,000 and N300,000   respectively.

Speaking, Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State said his administration was ready to improve on the successes recorded at the marathon.

“I assure you that by 2025,  we will upgrade it to  international standard, ” he said

Mbah said the state was ready to host the best athletes in Nigeria, adding that his administration would encourage all forms of sporting activities.
