Poet Maya Angelou becomes first Black woman to appear on US coin

The United States Mint has started distributing quarters featuring the image of Maya Angelou, making the poet and activist the first Black woman to appear on US currency.

 

The quarter features an image of Angelou with her arms uplifted, a bird in flight, and a rising sun behind her, with a portrait of George Washington on the “heads” side. The US Mint said the image of Angelou was “inspired by her poetry and symbolic of the way she lived”.

The poet and writer, who died in 2014, was the author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, in which she wrote about the racial discrimination she experienced growing up.

Anambra Girls ICT Competition – .

Girls of St. John Vianney Science College, Igbariam, Anambra State, have emerged winners of the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024, claiming the national championship title.

. reports that the National Girls in ICT Competition, organized by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, is a technology innovation competition for all girls in secondary schools across Nigeria.

The college’s innovative project, M-Tag VR, allows users to explore iconic landmarks like Zuma Rock and learn about the fascinating cultural aspects of Nigerian tribes.

The girls, Immaculate Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi, mentored by their coach, John Onuigbo, triumphed over teams from all 36 states of the federation in the competition which held on Wednesda.

The girls started the competition at the state level, where they won the Anambra State competition, then proceeded to conquer the South-Eastern regional championship, defeating teams from Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Enugu states, to make it to the national finals.

The organizers said their exceptional project and skills impressed judges throughout, culminating in a thrilling national victory against strong contenders from the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Rivers and Lagos states secured the second and third-place positions, respectively.

Speaking on Thursday, one of the girls, Immaculate Ikegwuonu, expressed excitement, saying, “We are so grateful for this opportunity! Thanks to our school which motivates us to pursue careers in ICT. Through this win, we hope to inspire other girls to do the same.”

Wissal Samlali is a health worker, advocate, consultant, humanitarian, volunteer and philanthropist, with over a decade of committed service in the health sector, spanning various continent of the world but much of her years devoted to enhancing service delivery in Africa health sector.

She was quoted as saying during one of her engagements in West Africa, “Health is an essential driver of development, just like petroleum or trade, if we know how to allocate resources effectively.”

Her last ten years of practicing in the field of medicine has not only taken her to five continents of the world, but has given her a first hand information on what the profession entails in both public and private health institutions. 

Wissal has worked in collaboration with different health ministries across Africa to find adapted solutions to specific problems. Hear her at another occasion during her plethora of engagements on the continent, “Africa has everything; let’s work together so that the best can emerge and become our daily life.”

Apart from sharing her in-depth expertise in the medical field and local health needs, capitalizing on projects aimed at making the health sector in Africa productive, her carefully thought-out development objective for Africa also include, restructuring the medical health sector as well as achieving operational efficiency by optimizing care.

Nwodo Igbos Lagos – .

A Former Governor of Enugu state, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, has said that the controversial comment, that ‘Igbos built Lagos’ was taken out of context. He has, however, argued that nobody can deny the fact that the Igbo contributed to the development of Lagos, Abuja and other states.

Nwodo who said this in an interview with Arise TV said, “Some people have quarreled with the word, ‘the Igbos created Lagos’, I think that was taking the thing out of context.

“What nobody can deny as a fact is that the igbos have contributed immensely to the development of Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and many other states and I know why anybody should quarrel with that statement of fact.

“Let’s take the two first cities that I have mentioned; if there are 10 markets in Lagos, seven were built from Swamps by Igbo traders. Not to talk about manufacturers in that City, those who have built residential houses, hospitality industries.”

Explaining further, the ex Igbo governor said that in Abuja, former ministers have also confirmed that ” 70% of the hospitality industries in Abuja are owned by Igbos and about 70% of the plazas are also owned by Igbos.

Nwodo also said the seaport in Lagos is the only operational seaport in Nigeria and the igbos do a lot of importation of goods.
